I've just read The Story of Art, and while it was a rather short overview of Western art, it was still really entertaining.
Can anyone recommend any other books on art? I've heard that Vincent Van Gogh's letters to his brother give an interesting view into an artist's mind.

Also art general. There is never any decent art threads on 4chan, and /lit/ is after all the bona fide experts on anything high culture.

They saw post impressionists as talentless half finished paintings requiring little skill and even less taste.

So dont be so quick to judge current conceptual art etc. We all have rigorous classical training, there is a reason why we are not painting landscape as much anymore.

2. Da Vinci's notes are also invaluable. Lots of observations about light, volume and technique
3. Liessman's Philosophy of modern art it's a good counter to Gombrich's History of art. Gombrich sees art as a history of forms while Liessman is more of the idea of art as an history of non utilitarian ideas.
4. Your edition of Gombrich's history of art should have a long bibliography on the back, neatly divided in categories according to ages and locations. It's really well researched so take advantage of it.
