3816402 No.3816402 [Reply] [Original]

I started reading the Gospels and some of the NT, and really it's not as bad as I thought it would be.

NewTestament God is way way different than the mosaic jew OT God.

I'm wondering if the Quran is similar? Anyone read it? Is it comparable to the NT or more like OT?

>> No.3816425

Theologically, more like OT (one God, rejects the concept of the Trinity). Ethically... little of column A, little of column B.

>> No.3816423

gospels are pretty decent, except John goes on the deep end with the whole "faith" thing

seems like mark, matt and luke were more interested in talking about jesus the good guy and being nice to others

You're supposed to read it in the original language. It rhymes and stuff

You mean the dude who wrote a letter using lots of metaphors and shit, under the guise of describing a crazy dream he had?

Not really surprising it seems bizarre.

Just out of curiosity, if I wanted to read the Qu'ran and the Bible which versions if any in particular should I go for?

This is probably asked a lot

For the Bible, the NRSV. I don't know about the Quran.

Not sure about the Qur'an, but the best English translation of the Bible is the NRSV or RSV.

The NRSV gets flak from people who liked older versions, even though it's a perfectly good translation, because it tries to be gender neutral in a lot of cases where prior English translations used the male pronoun. The thing is, it only does this in cases where the original text was unclear regarding gender. In the past, in English, we used male pronouns to refer to people of an unknown gender, whereas now we're more clear about this, and say "he or she" or whatever. It's basically just a matter of personal preference. I like the NRSV better because I know for sure when the text is clearly saying "he" and when it's either saying both or not specifying.

This makes sense in its own parameters.

The Qu'ran only has one "version", supposedly. Thats a big deal for them that the word has remained unchanged since the Prophet wrote it down. It has since been shown that there are different early revisions but those are all lllooonnnggg out of print. We're talking lifetime of the Prophet and soon after. There is only one official version, which in turn has official "approved" translations into other languages. There are some "unapproved" translations out there but they are much less common and they are much less different than, say, the King James version vs the New International Version or whatever.

Which interestingly makes it very easy for us to know what life was like when the book was written because technologically and intellectually/artistically/academically the culture has advanced almost nothing.

For the bible you should read the New American Bible. The others suffer from OT books being torn out.

You wouldn't want to miss out on the middle of other books you read either.

Huh? There is no authority which "approves" of Koran translations... some are financed and propagated by certain governments or organizations, but that's a different issue.

There is no "original quran"

muhammed didn't write shit. The quran was written 20-40 years after muhammed according to what scribes could remember and make up.

The prophet Muhammad never wrote down his revelations from God. In fact, the Qu'ran was never meant to be a set of codes for living, it was only meant to detail the Muhammad's revelations in particular. By the time Muhammad died there were about 8 different versions of the "Qu'ran" in circulation, mostly used for sectarian division and population control.
