Hey /lit/,

I'm taking a 20th century literature class in night school. We were asked to read Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and George Orwell's Animal Farm. We were given an assignment with the choice to either write a comparison or contrast essay. I chose to compose a comparison essay. So far I've came up with these three similar major themes but I'm not too sure ho to further develop it:

1.The tragic tyranny of the crass ruling system over the most worthy.

2.The gradual increase in immorality and cruelty of those given unlimited authority.

3.The perversion of worthy ideals through an unequal distribution of power and resources and the apparently unstoppable acceleration of this process.

Any thoughts on how I should develop it?

I've only read OFOTCN and I've heard a bit about Animal Farm. I think you're onto something here

You have a good start, just work with that

There's a group therapy session in cuckoo's nest where they all start picking on the gay guy that reminded me of the trial scene in Animal Farm where hysterics bring charges against others and themselves regarding counter-revolutionary plots.

Hey OP,

If you're having trouble developing your arguments, try working with these ones :

1. Both Nurse Ratched and Napoleon operate through cruelty and treachery.

2. In each novel, rules are set in place to maintain the structure of the hierarchy and to fulfill the leader’s title.

3. Both leaders are manipulative authoritarians with the desire for order and complete power.

Haven't really thought about it before but these texts work well together. What you suggested should work. Unless the essay is more than 2000 words or so, I'd keep the three ideas you have, and compare the different ways in which they are achieved, the differences between the systems etc.

A more detailed approach to a smaller number of themes often works better than making a huge number of points and not developing them.

Wow, out of all the 20th century books, they sure picked the shittiest ones for you to read. There are so many far superior ones.

Care to offer alternatives anon? What qualifies as appropriate for such a course and assignment in your mind?
