What does /lit/ think of the book "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding?

Is the best aspect of the book the sociological study of human nature or the storytelling?
Who's your favorite character and why?

Tell me your opinion on this excellent piece of literature.

This.

Give your homework an honest effort and then come back with what you have and we will help. We won't do it for you.

I say we lightly. There has got to be someone else here who wouldn't mind pulling their heads out of their asses for a bit to help a newbie along.

Why does one have to be better than the other? Isn't the strength of the novel based on the fact that each aspect is strong and woven into the other?

I think it's a good book and a far more realistic reinterpretation of The Coral Island.

Do your own homework, Billy.

Which one? I like the black-and-white one, but the American one is pretty poor.

I think most people remember the American, full color version. Which wasn't very good.

why a pig??
whynot a cow, or a goat, or anything else..

>> No.4375376

>>4375335
Because pigs are associated with physical and spiritual uncleanness and, in some cases, demonic possession in the old and new testament of the Christian Bible, which is linked to the book by the fact that the sacrificial pig-head's name is "The Lord of the Flies" which is a literal English translation of "Beelzebub," a alternate name or title for Satan. And the book is basically all about the inherently evil nature of humanity, so the connection there is pretty obvious.

but I guess the goat would work aswell.

It's a shame because the 1963 one was really great.

Yeah, but goats being associated with demons and the Devil is kind of a more Medieval Catholic thing, it doesn't really have all that much grounds in the Bible. Plus, the image of a smiling goat's head on a stick I don't feel is as much of a striking or iconic image as that of a pig.

And pig's are just fucking grosser than goats, they roll around in mud and shit all day, and make more distinctly scary and repulsive sounds, so it's easier to make them seem creepy and evil. They sort of embody filth and repugnance from a human point of view in a lot of ways. Goats just look like sagely old men and eat grass all day, they ain't never bothered nobody.

bu-but i think pigs are cute.

First of all, this is not a plea for help with homework. However I did just finish writing about the book in an assignment that will determine a large part of my final grade, I am just so psyched about my work that I want to share the amazing book with you guys and talk about it. (do you guys honestly believe I would ask people on 4chan to help me with an assignment this important?)

Personally I think the storytelling is the better part of the book, as you wouldn't get everything from reading it without also knowing the essential theories of social psychology.

was supposed to read "Personally I think the storytelling is the better part of the book, as you wouldn't get psychological brilliance of the book from reading it without also knowing the essential theories of social psychology."

You're the kinds of evil that are holding societal advance down.
