Has anyone learned a dead language to read its literature? What language? Was it worth it?

>> No.457178

I learned Latin for many reasons... it's a slow bitch to translate so yeah wasn't worth it for the sake of translation... plus almost every great, still existing, Roman work has already been translated.

I learned Latin in school. Did not enjoy it that much, barely got my Latinum (sort of certificate that you might need to study certain subjects at university).
Now I am glad that I have at least rudimentary knowledge about it, because I study history. I am actually sorry I did not put more effort into it in school. And that I did not learn greek, because I had to teach myself the basics.

But its pretty helpful to be able to compare the translations to the original, because some of the translations have a certain bias.
At least for source-critique you gotta at least know how to translate some sentences with the help of a scientific dictionary.

I didn't learn Latin sheerly for the sake of reading its literature, although I've enjoyed using my prowess to read Ovid.

I've also used my knowledge of Bengali and Sanskrit to explore texts that are closer to the original Hindu classics.

OP here:
I was thinking about teaching myself Old English, but there isn't anything to read except for Beowulf and the Bible.

Old Norse, bro. The fucking sagas and Eddas are awesome. Ancient Greek might be interesting, too, but it's ridiculously difficult.

>Old Norse
Where did you learn that? (if you say Icelandic I will fucking murder you)

Also West or East dialect? (guessing West due to Sagas)

This guy again. Confronted with numerous sources that say "Icelanders can largely read Old Norse, with some things being incomprehensible", he concludes "Icelanders can't read Old Norse".
