How do you take notes, /lit/?

Since we are supposedly all anonymous here, could you share your notes with us? Perhaps sending a picture of an annotated page of a book?

I'd like to see, because I don't know how to take notes.

it's up to you.

I can't now, but I'll try to in a bit if the thread is still alive.

In essence, I annotate margins of books with a summary of important content. Notes in separate books will typically be point form summaries of key passages and an explanation to myself of the importance or relevance of the passage.

Lately, for my dissertation, I've been trying to keep notes in a wordpress blog that is ostensibly not google searchable. So far its working as a single place to dump everything that is potentially relevant. Sifting through it all later's gonna be a bitch, though.

anyway, I'll check back later.

I write them down in a notebook.

Try this. It's excellent.

Here's how I do it:

1. Underline all the interesting parts in pencil.
2. Write all the characters, things and names you're likely to forget down in a notebook. Write key words in colored pen, followed by a dash, followed by an explanation of what the key word is.

Then you can flip through the book in class for stuff to bring up (mark stuff you def want to bring up with sticky note flags), and study for tests with the notebook. Underlining makes it easier to find quotes to use in essays, too. I almost never write tiny notes in the book (because it's cramped) unless I have some kind of epiphany. Hopefully your teacher doesn't want you to do the thing were you mark "metaphor", "metonymy", "foreshadowing", because that's tedious and clutters up your notes, making it harder to find the important stuff.

This is how I annotate philosophy, biographies, things like that. The only fiction I took notes for was Infinite Jest at someone's recommendation, and in that particularly case it was helpful.

I was really uncomfortable about it at first, but it really helps me focus when I'm reading something dense. Those "active reading" techniques your teacher told you about in high school english can actually be helpful.

These are books I own, I would never do that to a library book.

I don't take notes.
I just remember everything and assume that my memory is infallible. If something doesn't add up or if I can't recall something specific, I just dismiss it as unimportant or attribute it to an external snafu.

If I am reading for a class or whatever I read with a journalist notepad next to me and write down page numbers and quotes.

Yup.

I will jot short thoughts down in the margin; when I come to something harder, it's time for the park + my notebook.

But really, experiment around to see what works for you. Also, multi-colored pens are something worth looking into.

I always carry a spare notebook to allow for thoughts while reading. I don't take notes to read them but to refine thought so I just care about the writing process.

Yeah, that's a big part of why I take notes. I also find that I'll retain the information much better if I summarize it, so it's nice to put those summaries in the margins because it not only helps me remember the information better, but if I need to I can just refer to those notes paraphrasing the whole page.

Just buy a book and underline things that stand out, write little notes to follow along with developments or words that are related
For the love of god, don't be like those people who have the need to summarize a paragraph with "this guy did this shit" or with reactions like "omg I can't believe she jut did that, lol"

Eh, it's just that the book is all over the place so keeping notes to remind you of little things could be helpful. If you have pretty good memory and don't mind missing a couple of details it doesn't really matter.
