I really liked it. Most of the Final Fantasy series is relatively high quality.

Gameplay is not okay. It's mindlessly picking the same menu a million times, or following a clearly established path, waiting for a cutscene to happen.

>> No.4797099

Good luck with that.

I haven't found many books that are as out there with their plotlines as a lot of Japanese videogames or anime. The day I find a book like NieR will be a good day, but I'm not holding my breath for that.

I think a lot of Japanese fantasy is based on their interpretation of Western culture, which tends to be idiosyncratic and naive (a lot like their English). They see us as alien and otherworldly, which is total bizarre to us and why our fantasy is totally different. We understand our own culture a lot better than they do. I'm sure it goes both ways whenever westerners make fantasies about samurai or ninja.

Final Fantasy X is kind of interesting in that respect. The woman tasked with saving the world, Yuna, follows a Shinto-esque religion and is dressed in a kimono. Auron is a ronin and mentor for all the dumb young people, who apart from Yuna are all very non-Japanese. The world is doomed by man's greedy use of technology, which has created Sin. It's a reaction to westernisation.

If you can give it the change, you should try Drakengard, from the same creators.

What in the fricking hell. No. No. No. It's just a standard take on how religion hinders progress. Albhed are chased by that religion. Every race in the game represents something from humanity, and Albhed are the potential of humankind. They and their machines are essential to defeating Sin, and after that, "Sin", the conception of humans having to atone for that religious "sin" that they never made dissapears. Also, you took Auron, who is cynical and full of regret for what he is not. He was really devoted before learning the truth of Spira, and he would hate himself even more if others took after him. The dumb young people are the ones who bring the change. This is best represented with Tidus, who changes the whole cast and makes them search for another path. He is one of the best characters in a Final Fantasy, and believe me, I really disliked him when I first played.

I am supposing that you haven't completed the game yet. There is no other way to justify yourself. In fact, Sin is a product of some guy who took his beliefs too far and couldn't accept that times were changing. And that his city was going to get blown up or assimilated. Damn, the higher-ups recognize many times during the events of the game how much of a lie the necessary spiral of death and the teachings of Yevon are. But they aren't saying that religion is bad either. That is why you have various races in the game, each one representing a big perspective on how humans see life. They are just using them to tell you a history. At the end, the only message that the game truly gives you is that "This is your history. If you want to change it, you will do it"

Well obviously they win out in the end don't they, against superstition and fanaticism. It's still about westernisation.
