Thoughts on Lovecraft?
For some reason I feel like you guys would really dislike the works.

I like Lovecraft. I like macabre and fantastical stories. Sometimes his writing can be overly descriptive though.

He's best suited to shorts, which are often pretty good. Anytime he drifts into novella territory he gets tiresome.

FUN FACT: Lovecraft himself called his mythos “Yoggsothothery” in his lifetime.

The term “Lovecraft Mythos” wasn’t popularized until after his death.

Going through a major Lovecraft phase right now, working chronologically through his short stories. Right now reading his essay on horror lit, nice little survey and very indicative of his tastes. His little prose thing Ex Oblivione is nice (in a depressing way). I'm also partial to the White Ship.

Obsessively read every story of his my senior year of high school, fell in fucking love Lovecraft. Quite a few of his stories share major similarities but that also carries a charm with it, that he was able to create so much work that was so similar yet each and everyone captivating as it was.

One of the few horror writers I've ever liked, mostly because he truly embraced the aspect of HORROR. No one survives, no one has a happy ending, there is no savior, there is no 'ah glad it's over'.. Nope, it's fucking never over. Just like life, that is true horror.

Really? Lovecraft would be such a bro if he wasn't a shut in.

>> No.4814742

Despite his rampant xenophobia, antisemitic and racist views he's an absolutely brilliant horror author. "The Rats in the Walls" is so damn good, it's almost a perfect essay on how to write the ideal short story. The atmosphere in "The Colour out of Space" is ridiculously good. If you want to try him out, buy the Penguin editions and work your way from The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories to The Thing on the Doorstep and Other Weird Stories and, lastly, The Dreams in the Witch House and Other Weird Stories. You'll find that the annotations by S. T. Joshi are invaluable.

Lovecraft's basically hit-or-miss. You either love his writing style and the unique atmosphere he can create of pure cosmic horror, or you find his verbosity excruciating, pretentious and the big reveals at the end to be laughable. And, again, he's extremely racist (he wrote a "poem" named "On the Creation of N*ggers" for fuck sake) so that can certainly be off-putting.

Wherever you might stand on Lovecraft, "The Street" is fucking god awful.

This. Man, those gods aren't even gods. They're just beings from another plane of existence we could never even hope to comprehend. Just witnessing a glimpse of these cosmic truths is enough to cause anyone to lose their sanity. They're proof that all our beliefs, structures and concepts are hopelessly incorrect. As Burleson said, Lovecraft's universe is "a universe in which humanity is an insignificant blot, fated to come and go, its appearance unnoticed and its passing unmourned."

Fuckin' metal.
