Currently reading this, but I want to get a better picture of the guy. I really want to get in his head and understand his thinking.

What can I read to get a fuller understanding of him as a person?

You must learn about the players and civil wars that came before him, the gracchi brothers, marius, sulla, etc.

http://www.livius.org/caa-can/caesar/caesar00.html has a gloss of primary sources that cover him so you can get an idea of the major ancient commentators

Secondary sources are numerous and range from pop horseshit to serious scholarship. For the latter, you probably want Caesar: Politician and Statesman by Mattias Gelzer. Also check this out: http://dcc.dickinson.edu/caesar/caesar-bibliography

He killed people to gain power, which he used to massacre a country to gain more power, which he used to massacre his enemies. I think it's a pretty fair label.

That's because you're a chick. Stick to interpretative pomo histories of underwater women's basket-weaving guilds and leave manly history to men.
