There's a new Stephenson coming in May called Seveneves.

>A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space.

>But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain . . .

>Five thousand years later, their progeny—seven distinct races now three billion strong—embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown . . . to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth.

And a different synopsis:

>When the moon blows up, the earth’s atmosphere is predicted to go through changes that will eventually lead to a Hard Rain, a meteorite storm that could
last for thousands of years, rendering the earth’s surface uninhabitable. In preparation, the nations of the earth send an ark of humans to an International Space Station. But the Station isn’t immune to the galactic catastrophe and many of its people are lost, mostly men. When stability is reached, only seven humans remain, all of them women. Jump forward thirty thousand years. Two peoples exist: those who survived on Earth, living rustic, primitive lives; and those who derived from the Seven Eves of the space station, affluent, sophisticated, organized sects looking to colonize the surface of earth. Stephenson’s next novel is an epic potboiler, with political and military intrigue, and plenty to say about evolution, genetic engineering, and civilization as we know it.

mite b cool

So.... It's just Turn A Gundam, but with the moon replaced by a space station?

The environment on Earth (and it's ability to support life as we know it) is inherently dependent on the Moon being there.

The moon stabilizes our axial tilt which in turn allows a clam, gradual (relative to human being's sense of time) change of the seasons. Without the moon shit would be fucking nuts, no plant life would be able to grow. Also, we'd probably have extreme periods of our tilt putting one side of the earth in direct sunlight for long periods of time, meaning that sides roasting to death while the other side freezes to death.

Book sounds interesting, but I'm not sure why they'd return to a planet that is no longer able to support life.

Seeing as there are still primitive humans on earth when they return, I'm guessing he just ignored the tilt thing.

It's the atmosphere that smoothes things out. Not the moon.

Who gives a shit, it was obvious from the start that even if released it would be a massive failure.

Why doesn't he just write a novel about an autistic man with a penchent for reciting encyclopedia entries?

>The only part that gave me any trouble was calibrating an ending that would leave the reader satisfied that the story had concluded while leaving the impression of an open-ended world. No doubt opinions will vary on that.

If you're expecting a good ending out of Stephenson at this point, you're a fool.

Reminder that one of Stephenson's early novels had a story about a lesbian who saves a woman from being raped by men and then rapes her herself

Reamde was just a combination of this prick trying to show off his trivial knowledge of really random, unrelated things and cram in as much as his mind apparently thought was awesome into one book: Russian mobsters! Kidnappings! Terrorists! Spies! Super secret internet cafes! Computer hackers! Ass kicking Chinese people JUST LIKE MAH JACKIE CHAN MOVIES! Okay, we get it, Stephenson, you have the mind of a fifteen year old. No one cares.
