Hey, /lit/.
I feel odd. I've been commuting to school/uni/work for almost 8 years now (around 1,5 h a day). I always carry a book with me and spend the time on the train reading, unless I talk to a fellow commuter (a friend or, sometimes, a stranger - actually, several books served as good conversation starters). Still, I don't meet many friends on the train so I read most of the time.
I was riding back home late in the evening today when I felt something weird. I had pulled out a book and started reading it but suddenly noticed this girl sitting opposite from me who was about my age (I'm also a girl, btw). A situation in which I had found myself thousands of times before--reading a book, being surrounded by strangers--suddenly became unbearably awkward. What the fuck, I thought, why am I reading instead of engaging in a conversation with a person sitting right here? Then I felt weird for feeling weird. Then I racked my brains for a possible excuse for starting a conversation, but before I came up with anything, she plugged her ears with earphones. And then I resumed reading.
Have you ever been in a similar situation? Do you ever think to yourself: I should be ........ instead of reading? Or was my sudden flush of self-consciousness simply a result of too much time spent online or something? Pic somewhat related.

Also, I was reading Orientalism by Edward Said and she wore Harem pants. I thought it was funny.

22 yearrs old here- I constantly get the feeling that I'm wasting my life, not doing anything worthwhile... and I'm right, I don't go to school, still live at home with my mom, regular basement dwelling details.. I never get that feeling while I'm reading though. As long as you're headed towards something than I feel you're doing better than the majority of the visitors of this site.

OP here, I'm also 22, also wasting my life, and I feel it even while reading. But that's irrelevant :) It just felt so weird today to realize that people are engaging in solitary activities like reading or listening to music when they're riding on a train together and maybe... just maybe... could benefit more from talking to each other instead. Any thoughts?

The only thought I have on the issue at hand is that it's kind of ironic that engaging in the arts HAS become such a solitary activity because aren't art forms supposed to a) make you feel empathetic towards humanity as a whole and b) inspire you? One time when I was on the bus, a guy boarded it. From the shape of his head and face, he looked like he had som sort of mental disability. It was subtle though, not like a Down Syndrome face. So anyways, he sits down next to this average looking woman who looks to be in her twenties.

Guy: Hi, how are you?
Girl: Fine...
Guy: It's getting pretty cold isn't it?
Girl: Yeah...
Guy: I heard it was going to reach -10 degrees (can't remember exact figure)
Girl: ...
(After about a ten second pause)
Guy: I'm just heading off to work, but after I need to stop at (some store) and get supplies.

It more or less went like this, with him talking and her giving one word replies or no reply at all. He got off soon after. The girl looked really uncomfortable. The guy didn't give a fuck though, he was always happy.

When I went to the bathroom once there was this guy with a severe mental handicap. I was just washing my hands and I guess I was near his stuff because he just started screaming at me. I told him to calm down, but he was freaking out. So I left. Then I say him in the hall and he was terrified of me. It was bizarre.

This reminds me of yesterday, I was sitting in train, reading American Psycho, when some women sat next to me. She was quite hot but I continued reading. I was only like 100 pages into that book. First 100 pages were quite boring(atleast for me), just describing everyones clothes, etc, so I wouldn't have even imagined, that reading this in public is bad idea.

Just as she sat next to me, I got to the chapter, where he starts raping whores. I hoped, that no one sitting near me would be curious of what am I reading. It felt like watching porn(gore porn) in public.

Honestly, I was so glad she didn't talk to me. "Oh, what book are you reading? What is it about? Uhm...Psycho is brutally killing people. Oh...I see..."

I remember the day that I realized I couldn't live in a vacuum, that I couldn't walk alone.

I had been working night shifts for three weeks, and working during the weekends as well. The only people I had talked to, or even seen, were my coworkers, and the people who worked in the grocery store that was open 24/7.

The nature of my job made it so, that I couldn't really talk to my coworkers, except for during the 30 minute food breaks.

It felt absolutely horrible, but I learned from the experience. I realized that I need people. Which later pushed me into being more social.

Any talk-to-stranger anecdote? I have a good one...

A few months ago I was taking a plane to an small city in Spain (I'm spanish, btw). Besides me there was this girl reading some magazine, and I started reading my book (in english, I think I was Everything that rises must convert). Anyway, she ask me how I could read a book in English, it was so difficult, blah blah... we talk for awhile, then she ask me for my phone number and we split up at the airport... But after that the thing went weird. She start texting me everyday, ask me "have you forgot me?" because I didn't replay in one hour.. totally crazy...

after a few days she lost interest and everything was back to normal.

anyone else? :-)

When I was a 16-year-old commuter, I got on the train one day, pulled out a book (by Freud) and started reading when this girl sat down on a seat opposite to me. She wasn't particularly pretty or well-dressed and there was absolutely nothing special about her but for some reason, she immediately caught my attention. It was one of those moments when you just know you have to talk to the other person. She must have felt it too because she started the conversation (a lousy conversation starter--"You're reading Freud, which grade are you in then?"--but I was immensely grateful). We started talking about books, theatre, movies etc; it turned out she was awesome and we had a lot in common. We talked and talked and talked and finally exchanged phone numbers. But neither of us ever called. I guess I was a little shy (she was a couple years older than me) and waited for her to call first... I regret it sometimes.
