I claim that 99% of anime out there is absolute fucking garbage. The remaining 1% ranges between "okay" and "bad".

Anime is, for the most part, simply fucking nonsense and irritation. It is a essentially perversion of artistic expression. Repulsive through and through. Anybody I speak to who mentions anime in a positive light goes down 5-6 pegs in my book. Out of 10. Braindead people watch anime/ read manga. Real thinking people read fucking literature.

Don't come at me with your fucking sobbing defense of Japanese literary culture either. I'm not racist and I have great respect for the Eastern tradition.

Anime, however, destroys my faith in humanity. If any of you are into anime: fuck you. I mean it.

do you agree that an apparent distinction between genre fiction and worthwhile literature is also similarly present for anime? the bulk of seasonal anime rarely does anything new and is closer to cheap entertainment than art, i would agree, but, anime is a very new medium of art. the amount of time literature, or any other tradition art, has been building itself up makes a proper comparison difficult. the amount of labor required, among other things, to produce anime differs greatly from a simple book, which many people can (and do) produce, given enough time. not everyone is able to produce anime, and it must be done in profitable ways, so the majority will usually be entertaining. give it time, the gems will reveal themselves. you can watch those and decide whether or not anime can be a worthwhile art form.

also lots of anime is trash, except for the occasional series that's a little more cerebral like Steins;Gate, Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in the Shell. I personally can only enjoy anime if it has a SciFi/Cyberpunk plot and aesthetic to it, but that's just me.

I'll let you in on a secret, though. The styles of facial expression, tone and dialogue in anime are all super exaggerated because it makes it easier for autists (a significant market segment for anime) to infer things like plot, emotion, internal monologue, tension, etc.
