Anybody read this? Would you reccomend it to somebody who's an occasional reader and likes period pieces but doesn't necessarily knows a lot about history and would only read it as literary fiction?

No, it's not for me, it's to give as a gift to a girl. It's a period piece and has a female protagonist, both things which she likes but I was wondering if it was too heavy on the historical aspect because she wouldn't be that interested in that, or if she could just read it and enjoy it as a novel. I hadn't heard of the author nor the book either but I thought maybe somebody here had read it.

To be more clear, I a few months ago I gave her Jane Eyre and she loved it. I was wondering if this could make for a similar gift. And I ask about this specific book because I saw a very nice looking edition at a very reasonable price, so the question is bout this specific book and not historical fiction in general.
