Manly P Hall is a very interesting figure and a great scholar; but most of the things he references in his magnum opus (written at 19 years by the way), The Secret Teaching of All Ages is in no way verifiable and may serve only as a general guide (intuitive that is) in lack of proof. I belive most of it to be wishful thinking, especially regarding the anti-deluvian ages of Atlantis and Lemuria.

You should also check out Rudolf Steiner for a different approach; also the rosicrucian scholar Max Heidel and possibly Stephen Hoeller for a very interesting view on abysal psychology, gnosticism and neoplatonism.

First of all, the term is an archaism. It now indicates a wave of inter-disciplinary studies which try to deal which that which is not in our immediate reach. Let's call it speculative metaphysics.
