Tim Winton is pretty much all Australia has to offer..
No Australian authors make money pretty much so there are very few full time writers done here. Kinda sad.

Australians barely know Australian literature these days mainly because of the whole cultural cringe "we must bow to our Anglo-American cultural masters" thing; everyone still having a petulant whinge about their secondary school English teachers and their book choices as well as the Australian tendency to not like any sort of reflection on how fucked up our country is and shit like that.

Then that's coupled with a fucked up book retail market squeezing small publishers who publish alot of the actually decent Australian content (and a lot of that shitty crap that appeals to champagne socialist, some of whom are teachers unfortunately) and you have a shitty situation to begin with.

Finally there's the sheer fact that Australian authors have a hard time getting international publishing deals (Bryce Courtenay had a hell of a time despite being one of Australia's best-selling writers) primarily because markets like America have a dislike of non-Anglo-American literature.

And that's why nobody reads Australian lit.

Also vague recommendations include

- Patrick White (!!!!),

- Peter Carey (even if just to whinge about how Americanised he's become),

- Tim Winton (just so you can bitch with most of Australia's high school graduates).

Poets:

- Banjo Paterson (even if Bush Romanticism is stupid),

- Henry Lawson (just for The Bulletin debate thing. He's a much MUCH better short story writer though),

- A.D. Hope,
- Judith Wright,

- Les Murray (even if he's a conservative nutjob who could beat the shit out of Hemingway despite being possibly autistic).
