Brazillian publishers suck so much that books in english (imported) are cheaper than most books in portuguese. That's why i always go for books in english from used bookstores. I can get the same book for less than half of the price (including shipping) i would pay in a normal bookstore (without shipping).

Londo has some pretty good bookstores and there are a few more I keep meaning to visit.

It's a shame though: a lot of independents in the heart of the city have closed over the last couple of years. A tonne on Charing Cross Road have closed (which was famous for all the bookstores) and there was a really nice Oriental bookstore near the British Musuem which has sadly closed too.

I forgot about Marchpane, in London's Cecil Court, near Leicester Square; probably because it's so expensive (I've only ever bought one book from there). But its collection of antiquarian childrens books is lovely and unsurpassed.

If I'm not too late....

Depends what you're after really. You can get pretty specific shops here. There aren't any great bookshops in the immediate vicinity of Tower Bridge though.

Go to Charing Cross Road, in the West End for starters. It's not what it once was but it has the main Foyles branch, which is spread over several floors and probably has the best range in the city; there's Blackwells too, which has all the usual sections but is very good on non-fiction (philosophy, etc); there's a couple of 2nd hand stores still around, such as Any Amount; and there's a couple of art bookstores still there as well, like Koenig books.

Just off of Cambridge Circus / Shaftsbury Avenue (which is halfway up CCR) you've got Magma, which is great for arts / design books and fashion magazines. And about 1/4 of the way up CCR is Cecil Court with lots of nice specialist stores (might not have anything you want but they're nice shops).

After that... well, fives mins from the Tottenham Court Road end of CCR you have two other possible stores - the London Review Bookstore (see posts above) is one way, near the British Museum. There's also a very good Oxfam charity bookshop just off of Great Russell Street near the British Museum and just down the road from that is Bookmarks - the Socialist bookstore! If you're so inclined...

And I suppose you can keep heading down, back on to Shaftsbury Avenue where the big comic bookstore, Forbidden Planet is located.

Look at the map, all those stores are within that radius.
