I remember reading The Idiot with a picture on the Jesus on the cover. People often either called me weird or said "hurr-hurr, you're an idiot." Many preppy kids called the picture on the cover weird and ugly (likely because it was a Russian painting, and there are few Russian Orthodox Christians where I live). When I told them it was Jesus, they realized it and a sense of shame overwhelmed their visage.

I used to read a Bible on the subway when I was taking a course called Classical and Biblical Background to Modern Lit. People used to give me weird looks or intentionally try not to look at me (though you could see them do it out of the corner of their eye). It might have been the Bible, or it might have been the button poked through the cover that read, "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU LOOKING AT?"
