There was a penpal thread a few weeks ago that turned out pretty well. I know most of you don't want to give out your addresses online, much less on 4chan.

So, I know this isn't nearly as good as hand-written mails, but is anyone up for an email-pen-pal?

leave your emails, and maybe say something about yourself. Find someone to discuss /lit/ with, /lit/erati

>> No.700504

or we could just have an aim/msn thread a la /r9k/

>> No.700503

Well.... e-mails could be cool, but its exactly the same as 4chan only you now have to put up with some pretentious tard personally as opposed to anonymously.

Penpals was a novelty, I want to see if it ever turned out good

look through their current aim/msn thread
i hate every single one of them

>> No.700524

I would, but my handwriting is atrocious.

>> No.700526

i always thought it'd be cool if we could get some kind of /lit/erati book "club" (I use this term very loosely) where we all focus on one book for a while and discuss it in detail. somehow i dont think this will ever be realized

The letter system could work out if we planned it a bit better. Someone should post their address, to which prospective penpalers then send 'activation postcards' in order to confirm their address and legitimacy, and thereby have themselves included in a database of verified penpals. Then, only verified penpals will be able to have access to this database, thus ensuring each other's security.

exactly
e-mails are better than IMs; in some way, it's more personal.

but penpals are TOO personal

Many have tried, all have failed.

/book/ even tried it back in the day and it didn't really work, and they've got far fewer people than we do.

someone post their email
i dont have the balls to start this

>>700526
a few of us tried this a while back, i think we had the most votes for starting with Benito Cereno but then it just didnt pan out

>> No.700584

HOLD IT, HOLD EVERYTHING

does anyone know if the penpal programme actually failed?

>> No.700620

>>700534

I'd be willing to do this.

If anyone has a PO box... that would be the easiest way, honestly. But I would love the idea of a penpal/book club.

What if we did some kind of newsletter. Where we type out our thoughts on the books, everyone gets a copy... and then the next issue we issue rebuttals.

I got myself a penpal. I wrote to him last week. We exchanged addresses through e-mail, which was exchanged on this board.

>> No.700639

Ohoh! I just sent my reply to the OP who had started that very same penpal thread. His letter was two back and front pages long, and very nice. C: I have a feeling we'll get along quite nicely.

I wouldn't recommend doing an assigned anything. It takes a big part of the fun out of randomly writing people.

Ah, why not. I don't normally frequent /lit/, more of a /fa/ or /sci/ person myself, but it couldn't hurt.

I'm a second year maths student, I love fashion and play guitar. My favourite book has been the Count of Monte Cristo since I was a kid, and I'm currently reading 100 Years of Solitude.

I'd post my e-mail, but I realised I can't think of anything interesting to write about myself. Anyway, I love the comforting feeling of 'I'm just like everyone else' and 'it wouldn't work anyway'.

Other than literature, I'm into non-fiction and words in general. I am also learning French and sign language. I frequently visit tvtropes.

As for my tastes in literature, I tend to read realistic fiction, magical realism, and dystopian works.

This month I read: Aesop's Fables, Freakonomics, A Clockwork Orange, The Code of Hammurabi, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy , and Watchmen.

I'm only 18 so I'm still developing my taste for what I like and don't. I will be majoring in English and my minor will be in film. I am currently reading William Faulkner's Sound and The Furry. Sort of confusing me, but I really don't mind rereading the sections I don't understand.
