What about the cases where, bear with me, external factors actually are to blame? Correctly identifying them is a badge of inferiority which proves you deserve both your condition and how you are treated as a result? What about PTSD-stricken veterans? Kids raised by narcissists? Self-awareness is a fault and not a virtue?

Usual denialist neoliberal garbage. The world, its material organization and the actions of all individuals after their own mispercieved self-interest are totally blameless. The are no problems beyond what you create for yourself. Pay no attention to the jew behind the curtain.

There is something more beta, and that is assigning all the blame to yourself like a good little self-deprecating scapegoat while allowing people to shit all over you because it's all your own fault and you deserve it.

On the other hand it's can also be a form of grandiose delusion, since it requires you to think you're an unmoved mover self-controlling agent outside of causality spawning your own circumstances like an omnipotent god. Self-responsibility is a ridiculous meme that requires tremendous amounts of denial and cognitive dissonance.

Laziness is a character trait, not a free choice. People's characters are determined by biological and environmental circumstance. People aren't arbitrarily and voluntarily less good at things than they could be, it would make no sense for them to be.

If you are less lazy than someone, or more volatile and impatient, or more depressed and less happy, or prettier or more intelligent, it's not because you choose to be so. Nobody in his right mind would choose to sabotage himself in such a way.

There is no such thing as potentiality here. At any given moment, a person does all he can. If he could have done something more to his own benefit he obviously would have.

You're like someone looking at someone dangling from a cliff scared for his life and, falling to his death when he's no longer able to hold on, comments "he should have held on for longer!". Of course he should have, and he would have, if he could. The fact that he didn't do so despite himself is enough proof that he couldn't. The same goes for all sorts of self-sabotage.

Going home and smoking weed or watching youtube videos was way more fun than doing school work. Yeah I was depressed and didn't have friends but it was still really my fault deep down.

The depression was a real thing that I later got help for but the reason I become depressed in the first place was because of things I did. Also people who are depressed need to seek out help. There is a kind of feeling you have where you don't really want help and would rather just die but people have to fight it to get better.

In college you need to actually try and I'm able to do that. I'm still the same person but I realize that the way I was in high school was my own fault and accepting that was the only way I was able to fix it.

Either you were not really willing or not really able. In the second case it is not your fault since you simply did not possess what it took to fix the situation, and in the first case it is not your problem since you simple did not really desire to fix the situation.

It is either not your fault or not your problem.

>The depression was a real thing that I later got help for but the reason I become depressed in the first place was because of things I did. Also people who are depressed need to seek out help. I'm still the same person but I realize that the way I was in high school was my own fault and accepting that was the only way I was able to fix it.
I would say the belief that something is one's own fault does aid a person while still being fundamentally untrue. It's one of those "untruths as a condition of life" as Freddy phrased it. You didn't realise it was your fault, you deceived yourself into thinking it was in order to muster up the courage to persevere. The horrors of life are inflicted upon us with no fault of our own, but acknowledging this makes it hard to go on living, so we adhere to certain beliefs as coping mechanisms regardless of how true they are.

Even if this belief seem to make it harder on ourselves, this hardening paradoxically makes the burden of existence easier to bear since you do not have to acknowledge the lack of justice of it all. It's a self-chastising variety of the just world fallacy, one of the lies we tell ourselves to get through the day and make life somewhat acceptable. It stems from an unwillingness to acknowledge that life isn't fair.

Do you have any proof for this? I mean, in a way, sure it is true, but it is problematic when you remove any sort of responsibility (for the desires) from the people and equate desire with immediate wants and needs. You also refuse to accept that people can hold paradoxical views, wants, needs and opinions at the same time, leaving the deciding factor to be "which one is acted out?" Heck, people can even lie to themselves!

An addition to this;
Assuming that even some sort of free will exists - that is, we can choose to not act on a desire sometimes at the very least or can affect what those desires are in the long term - it all starts to pile up and be pretty important, though not the most important factor (indeed we are very much shaped by our genes and our environment).

As, obviously, what we do or think today will affect what we are (able or willing to do) tomorrow. We don't need a huge amount of freedom, just some, yet it still means that there is a lot of responsibility on the free individual. Even if most of the time we'll be acting on some sort of "gut feeling of desire", some amount of free will already allows us to shape what that desire and our reaction to it will be.
