arndt if you want to read a lot of notes and critical essays. some of his phrasing is a bit stilted.

luke is fine. just general all purpose good.

harold bloom likes atkins. strongest focus on rhythm of the major translations. i think it's fine as well.

greenberg is an interesting darkhorse contender. some modernized colloquialisms.

bayard taylor if you want to read the most widely read one historically (i think?). poetic, but definitely reads like shakespeare.

i need to finish my dante chart (i promise ill do it. i actually blocked some time for it a while ago but something came up, and also i wanted to read the sisson version to include it but haven't actually gotten around to it yet). i also suck with graphics so i need to rope in a friend with some competence here to make it look nice and shit.

faust is more complicated because it has VERY varied meter/rhyme/rhyme/poetics/general style over the course of the work. it's harder to pick passages at random and offer up comparisons, or to make sweeping generalizations about the qualities/traits of any particular translation.i don't know how best to make a chart. also i haven't read the cosntantine translation.

I don't know how to make a chart at all senpai, u gouda. It's not like you need to start with the Greeks and read everything Goethe ever wrote.

The one German did a good post demonstrating translation variety by using Faust's first lines. It's what I'd have wanted from google half a decade ago. Seems character establishing and a good place to start.

Faust part 2 is weird territory, but the homunculus bottle as microcosm quote seems a salient sample for intrigued beginners. It is probably representative, though part 2 covers quite a bit of material.

Does the other non-Indian still do freelance? He has good eyes.
