I'm starting journey to the end of the night in a few days, how taxing is it to read? I'd like to finish it before school starts up in a few weeks, but I'm not sure if it's very dense as I've never read Celine before.

>> No.913217

Not dense at all. It's kind of a breeze to read and to me it was one of those books which you can't put down. It's a philisophical adventure story with lots of humor. It was written in french ''argot'' which means the language is basically simple. New Directions has a great translation, but I imagine it's simple enough in any translation to come across.

Not difficult or dense at all. Once I got to page three I was hooked and ignored all responsibilities until I finished. The Manheik translation (1980s) is the best. The older translation glosses over Celine's choppy, colloquial, vulgar style. It was made for a prude English-speaking world that didn't allow frank discussions of sex or curse words in books. Celine sanitized is not a very interesting Celine.
