You don't understand what I'm saying. When you pray TO Mary what you are doing is asking her to pray FOR you, which is the same thing as asking anyone else to pray FOR you. If you say you shouldn't pray to Mary what you are saying is that you shouldn't ask someone else, in this case the mother of Jesus, to pray for you.

We'd be atheists or affiliate with some other man-made, pagan religion. The Catholic Church is the most loving, all-encompassing religious body in the world. >which is the same thing as asking anyone else to pray FOR you.
No it isn't. If I ask someone to pray on my behalf I'm not acting as if they have godlike powers of being able to hear and answer prayers, I'm making a simple request of them.

By praying directly to a deceased person like Mary you are assuming they have godlike powers to hear and answer prayers, it's barely any different to pure ancestor worship. Not that, that isn't rife in Catholic countries as well.

You don't pray to Mary because she is not omnipotent and omnipresent like Christ is, thus she cannot hear you. She was human like anyone else. She was a servant of God, she had no special traits that would make her gain Divine abilities in heaven, nor did any of the other humans you worship.

What's your background?

>There is a postscript or smaller point to be added here to this paradox; which I know that many will misunderstand. Becoming a Catholic broadens the mind. It especially broadens the mind about the reasons for becoming a Catholic. Standing in the centre where all roads meet, a man can look down each of the roads in turn and realise that they come from all points of the heavens. As long as he is still marching along his own road, that is the only road that can be seen, or sometimes even imagined.

-G. K. Chesterton, "The Catholic Church and Conversion."

And yet you think that the people you know have the godlike power of being able to talk to God and get him to do stuff. If you think your mom is capable of that is it really so unbelievable that the mother of God is capable of merely hearing prayers and asking God for things?

Let me put it this way: do you think the people in heaven, the angels and the saints, AREN'T capable of hearing prayers? Do you think when you get to heaven you don't care about the people on earth, can't hear their requests, and can't ask God to help them? So they're LESS capable and LESS close to God than the people on earth?

Jesus very clearly respected Tradition, as evidenced by the pains he (and the Gospels, e.g. Matthew 1:1-17) took to establish himself as a part of that tradition. What Jesus had a problem with was putting TRADITIONS before the reason for the traditions. In other words, his problem was with people putting traditions before tradition.

Praying isn't a godly power. You pray because God is omnipotent and can hear you. Humans are not omnipotent, and do not become omnipotent on death.

Are you seriously suggesting that all Christians become omnipresent and omnipotent on death? That is the only way that Mary could hear the prayers of everyone on earth. You don't go to heaven to be servants of the living and speak to God on their behalf. You're there to worship God and live in God's glory. Your suggestion that all Christians in heaven are mini-gods that exist to help you is so far from God's Word that it genuinely appals me that there are so many of you.

>protestants constantly saying Catholics aren't Christians because "it's not in the Bible"

Where do you think the Bible came from? Do you think Jesus handed the apostles a King James New Testament at Pentecost?

It's OUR bible. The only reason you read the Apocalypse of John and not the Shepard of Hermas, the only reason you read Jude but not Clement 1, is the Catholic church. And don't even try to claim it was all made up at Trent because that's false, Trent was just confirming what was already universal (east and west) church teaching worked out through synods etc.

>And yet you think that the people you know have the godlike power of being able to talk to God and get him to do stuff.
Well yeah they have the power to talk to God. God is omniscient and omnipresent, anything you say or think god will know about. There's nothing godlike about earthly mortals being able to message God, God knows everything.

Making God do stuff however is not a power anyone has, nor does anyone think that praying obligates God to answer.

>do you think the people in heaven, the angels and the saints, AREN'T capable of hearing prayers?
Yes. Maybe not angels, but deceased persons very certainly cannot hear prayers.
>So they're LESS capable and LESS close to God than the people on earth?
No, they're infinitely closer to God. As close as is possible in fact. But they're also infinitely far away from Earth and all the people on it, dying doesn't gift them with sudden omnipresence.
