I'm thinking about reading the Bible. I mean the Old Testament. It seems to have great stories... Like, I was reading about Job and it really caught my interest.

Have you ever read the Old Testament (or parts of it)? Is it worth reading?

You either don't understand Ecclesiastes or you don't understand Taoism.

My guess? Both.

It's never too late to read the Bible. There is so much shit inspired or based on it, you have no idea. It's definitely a must read, and I'm an atheist.

Do you have any idea how many things you could slap a "Taoist" label on, if you you followed that shaky logic and applied the term so loosely?

BROTIP: Understand Eastern religions before you namedrop them. Or at least namedrop something like Jainism, so that informed people are less likely to call you on your bullshit.

Book of Job in a nutshell: Satan makes a bet with God that if He pisses in a man's face long enough, he'll renounce Him. God won the bet.

This is very important. Do what I did, read the bible as if you know nothing about it! You will learn some cool shit, like how the church basically makes shit up to cause fear in the public, and have people run to them.

Having read the bible, I would like to think I can call myself Christian. I still follow science (not a creationist by any means) but I believe the morals taught in the book are still relevant today and the God figure is a dick in the old testament.

I just think it's a really bad-ass story if you read it for what it is.

The old testament is 100% the opposite of the new one and sunday schools spend a lot of time explaining to little kids why the old guy changes so much in the middle of the book.
Christianity did well as long as 99.9% of christians couldn't read :)
But you should go with the jewish holy books. They are more classy and contain much more lulz. Really old-skool 'kill the other tribe' stuff. There's a reason why Alex in 'Clockwork Orange' lieked it so much.

Honestly, there's no reason not to read the bible, both testaments. Can you name a more important book in the history of Western Literature? I can't.

However, the best way to really learn it is to suffer through a lifetime of bible schooling and church, and grandmothers reprimanding you over the dinner table.

To elaborate on my point:

Satan (who in the Hebrew Scriptures is not God's enemy by any means; rather, just one among his servants) is given permission from On High to relentlessly destroy not only one man's property, but also his health, his livelihood, and the lives of his children. Illness after illness, death after death, meaningless pain after meaningless pain, Job continues to worship the God who damned him just to make a point.

The end of Job is essentially the end of 1984.
