The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Don't Panic is truly the best advice I've ever received.

Leto dies fairly early on, and then things calm down for a while as Paul learns about his destiny and whatnot. I'd recommend that you read at least through Children of Dune, though I finished the series proper. Haven't read any of the Brian Herbert novels except for Hunters and Sandworms of Dune, which were meh, but not terrible.

It isn't that bad, it's just that Lynch is a fucking crazy person. The movie is very eccentric, though Kyle Maclachlan is perfect as Paul and a lot of the visuals are incredible.

I couldn't finish Naked Lunch myself.
Perhaps if I did copious amounts of heroin it might approach making a sliver of sense, but I have my doubts.

Last three:
House of Leaves (READ IT RIGHT FUCKING NOW)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

Current:
Life, the Universe, and Everything

Next:
So Long, And Thanks For All the Fish
Mostly Harmless
Possibly House of Leaves again.

I'm re-reading the Hitchhiker series, because it's just so wonderful and I recently picked up the Picador box set. I already had the 'ultimate' Hitchhiker's Guide, but not the hardcover one.

Just rereading the Hitchhiker books. I'm probably going to reread House of Leaves a few more times and try to actually understand some of it next time.

Yes and no. It's the correlation/causation thing.
It certainly depends on what is being read.

I'm aware, the film's release actually predated that of the book by several months.

I just read the book last week, and then watched the film the next day.

Incidentally, what is the next Clarke I should read?

It took us three million years to get from monkeys who were literally shown how to use tools into humans. It would probably take him longer than ten years to do a whole ton if he were to physically evolve further, but that's moot anyhow as in the fucking book it says that the ones who made the monoliths had long since stopped using physical bodies themselves and simply were intelligence inhabiting the cosmos.

Well, that.
He's a child of the stars now, which is why the last chapter is called "Star Child".
The film makes it somewhat confusing, the book pretty much lays it out on the table for you.

Every book in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series.
And then Mostly Harmless made me bawww.

>> No.1677726 [View]

Also, Starship Troopers was pretty good. I just read that last week. I've always been a pacifist, and it provided some interesting perspective on military philosophy.
And then I just read 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was incredible. I read the entire second half in a day.

>> No.1677711 [View]

Don't read Dune until you're ready to read the whole series.
That said, definitely read it, it's amazing.

>> No.1677452 [View]

2001: A Space Odyssey (and then I watched the movie for the first time)

Dead Space: Martyr (meh, I like the games)

I have big list to read.
John Dies at the End, Pygmy (Chuck Palahniuk), Slaughterhouse Five, Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs, Atlas Shrugged (I know, shut up), Ulysses, House of Leaves, I can't think of too many more offhand.
2010, also, once that gets checked back in at the library.

I also have plans of reading The Dark Tower series and recently bought the Picador Box Set of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so I want to reread that series.

As long as you're not militant, I don't care what you think.
