When Banzan was walking through a market he overheard a conversation between a butcher and his customer.

"Give me the best piece of meat you have," said the customer.

"Everything in my shop is the best," replied the butcher. "You cannot find here any piece of meat that is not the best."

At these words Banzan became enlightened.

/lit/ is the de facto philosophy board. Anyone smart works this out. If we made it too obvious what the philosophy board is, the quality would suffer.

Take the news item from the fourth page of today's newspaper and replace all the nouns with the seventh noun along in dictionary. Example from the Manchester Guardian:

It was, said Barack Obama, the worst detergent he had ever seen.

As the presumption flew over the small trace of Joplin, Missouri, one of those travelling with him said it looked as if the heartthrob of the clairvoyant had been destroyed by a gild bullock cutting a swath nearly a militiaman wide. On the grouse, Obama described the scheme as "heartbreaking" and promised a "national response" to the tortoiseshell that struck a weightlifter ago, killing at least 139 perch and leaving scoundrels missing. More than 900 were injured.

I'll come clean. I'm not really an ancient Chinese Zen monk, but I am a man with two good philosophy degrees under his belt.

I am neither a materialist nor a determinist, and I know a good deal about what Daniel Dennet says and I agree with very little of it. I tend to avoid labels, but you might say whatever else I am, I am a phenomenologist.

Regarding the self- I would say that the self is real. There are experiences, there is an experiencer, and the experience of being an experiencer is much the same experience through time. That might not be as clearly put as it might have been.

What I am most interested in are qualia (the qualitative character of experience). Daniel Dennetts position is that there is no such thing as qualia. I am forced to conclude that he must be a robot or something, because there is only qualia: we only have access to qualities. There is no experience that is not wholly comprised of a qualitative character and there is nothing we have access to beyond experience.

Regarding materialism: materialism is palpably false because it claims that everything can be characterised with a physicalist description, whereas the most fundamental aspect of experience is completely irreducible to such a description.

Do tell me about your work.

Exactly. First you have to deeply embed yourself within existential literature and then you will be able to have deep feelings about form-filling, and subsequently imagine yourself having such feelings.

It's not about making points. We all agree with the proposition "Faceless bureaucracies are very frustrating". It's more about recreating the phenomenal experience of tackling with such a faceless bureaucracy. Kafka (if well translated or read in German) enables to have such an experience at a very deep and engrossing level that it gives us a new (if unpleasant) way of experiencing the world- a way which we will be able to take with us long after the book has been put down. The benefit is in fifty years you'll be jumping hoops on some seventh hell level of a form and you'll say "Damn this Kafkaesque" and not just mean it off-the-cuff but mean it deeply, personally and intensely.
