Not sure if you missed a larger note in it, you're talking about greater contexts, but I think it's worth mentioning because it almost ties into the same point, but the priest's monologue is also a mockery of the maudlin/saccharine dichotomy of entertainment. In a lot of movies and TV shows, this is just the punchline ending, the nice neat package that let us all know why we watched it, which is in itself a sham.
This character is clearly presenting a moral, and the actor engages with it, understands it, and presents it, with grace and talent... but it might as well have been a toothpaste ad, or Jerry's Final Thoughts, it's a leading role suddenly given to a bit part. And the force which he gave it, that presence and grace, well, it doesn't mean a damn thing either because it's not the end, it's not the nice little moral, it was a guy going ham at a completely unnecessary time in the play, and falling far short of any moral ("Fuck everybody. Amen.") long before the actual movie is over. He got his phone call, his look, etc and it meant nothing.

>/lit/ doesn't have anyone who's actually published.
I've been published dozens of times now. Usually what I've had published people on /lit/ talked mad shit.
Poems I've had published: "word salad" "garbage" "why would you even write this" "you don't understand prosody/meter/blahblahblah"
Short stories I've had published: "there's no point" "that doesn't make sense" "bad prose" "you don't understand blahblahblah"

What most of the "writers" here don't understand is that being published is more about persistence than anything else. Just keep sending your stuff places. You didn't get accepted? Keep sending your stuff places. You still didn't get accepted? Try sending your stuff more places.
Nothing, huh? You know what you should try? Writing more stuff, and sending it to all of those places all over again.

>Realize all of reality doesn't revolve around you and your immediate pleasure
It doesn't? Oh well, I'll keep acting like it does because that's immediately pleasurable.

They mean they're not well-read and have possibly never even heard of her.
I'd tell you to start with her nonfiction. The White Album is a good collection, so is Slouching Toward Bethlehem, interesting stories and and a unique point of view about American culture and counterculture.

Dull and dry.
No.
Not really. Historical curiosity is the only reason I could see someone being interested.
Not really.

I have a hard time even caring about it, you get God to show up you got my attention, anything other than that happens, discussion over.

Just so we're clear, you're saying in the OP that suicide is admitting:
>life is too much for you
>you do not understand it
And it happens because:
>you have recognized... profound reason for living
You don't see the glaring contradiction here? To recognize the absence of a profound meaning is pretty fucking profound, don't you think? If it's true, that's certainly an insightful thing to come across, a mark of understanding, certainly an easy starting place for something which is at the outset daunting or overwhelming... "too much for you."
This is a bunch of bullshit about what you think a suicidal is thinking about. It isn't. Suicide is the last resort all-in escape plan, plain and simple. If ennui is sufficient reason to pass right on by all available options and just go right to the last resort all-in escape plan, yeah, you probably are mentally ill.

I've done a lot of drugs and have no clue what it did to the way I view/create art. For awhile after I got clean I'd space out doing normal everyday stuff though, like pouring orange juice into my bowl of cereal or pissing on the toilet seat.
Maybe hallucinogens made me less willing to scoff at abstract art, I guess, if it's clear somebody put effort into it then why not appreciate it as design or just move on.

It's called anti-intellectualism, OP, if you're a libertarian I'm surprised you're not familiar with it already.
