Native Son, in the beginning when Bigger accidentally stifles Mary with a pillow.

It upset me so much, I threw the book across the room.

Dracula. Frankenstein was complete shit, but I am the only person on earth who holds this opinion and have resigned myself to being alone.

Typically, I need silence. Sometimes I'll go with classical, though, as long as the volume's low- I like Bach and Wagner. As for modern classical, Zoe Keating is the best.

YES THIS.

Sabriel, Redwall, A Wrinkle in Time, Hatchet, Little House on the Prairie (I remember "On the Banks of Plum Creek" being esp. good), The Secret Garden, The Hobbit, The Phantom Tollbooth, almost anything by Roald Dahl (my favorite was Danny, Champion of the World).

That's what I remember reading at age 10.

I'm reading The Hobbit. It's pretty good, but I'm at the end where Bard has killed Smaug and Thorin turns into an enormous douchebag with the treasure.

I have no idea why I like this.

Here's the definition I was given in AP Literature:

Genre fiction is written to make money and/or entertain, frequently both.

Literature is written to explore the human condition.

I was a bit young when I read it; I suppose if I revisited it now, I would like it more.

I disagree.

The cantos may reference each other, but that's not the entire story; it's a fairly linear tale of a journey down to hell and up to heaven. You can like one part more than another in the same way that you can like one part of a vacation more than another.

I read up to the middle of Paradiso. People rattle on about The Inferno because it is the only interesting part. Purgatorio + Paradiso were boring as shit, imho.

I just finished this, and loved it, which is not surprising because I know I like Steinbeck.

The question is this: What to read next, /lit/?

Top Contenders:

-Lord of the Rings Trilogy
-A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man
-Lord Jim
-July, July
-Demian
-House of Leaves

I like chamomile + mint. Pic related. However, the only hot thing I can drink in the morning is coffee (and sometimes instant breakfast).

I don't put sugar in anything. Personal preference.
