Not on a professional level (I doubt my publisher would be okay with me submitting a book a bunch of anons wrote,) but I could edit it a bit, if you like

We're not huge, but we are mid-size. The unsolicited manuscripts thing was really more hazing, as far as I can tell.

Not at all, actually. There's very little info-dump.

I like to think that I'm competent at my profession. Reading a lot of bad stuff doesn't necessarily make you praise to the mediocre manuscripts. If anything, it's a lot easier to tell when a book is just "okay" after doing this job for a while.

It's a new author, as far as I am aware.

>>4604541
It as kind of a hazing thing, I believe. They stopped me after about two weeks.

Not as much as I'd like to, but yes, I read for fun.

I highly doubt it will get that big.

I never thought that I would be in this field of work. I mean, I wanted to, but I never thought I could actually get here.

>>4604319
If the concept makes for a good story and isn't too distracting, go for it. I can ignore factual inaccuracy or some degree of internal inconsistency if the story is good enough.

A very small degree of internal inconsistency, of course, but still, not all books have to be perfect.

My degree is in computer science, so the hacker books were almost physically painful to read.

Well, lots of stories where the heroes go to slay a dragon that has taken over an ancient city.

Lots of sci-fi stories about robot uprising or a super l33t hacker fighting against a corrupt government

A couple of romance stories that were pretty much just Twilight ripoffs.

Some other stuff too, but I honestly forget most of it. Part of that may be the drinking.

>>4604264
It's not YA fantasy, really. We kinda...

Well, fuck. You're right, I can't really say more without it being obvious to somebody in the business.

Mostly horrid fantasy, sci-fi, and romance novels.

I try to not get assigned to Romance stuff as much, because I hate the genre. However, I read a lot of stuff that sounds like a bad D&D campaign, which can honestly be sort of entertaining.

>>4604248
I'm scared to google it.

>>4604224
Nope. Those novels are pretty rare, so the chances of us seeing one are slim to none

>> No.4604219 [View]

>>4604205
It's not actually smut. We wouldn't be publishing it if it was. It's just a damn good novel that happens to have a dragon-lovin' scene in it.

Smut is best self-published, honestly.

>>4604210
90% of the stuff I read is total garbage. Literally, some of the worst things I have ever read.

Especially my first few weeks at the company, when they had me go through the manuscripts that were being pushed on us by questionable (or non-existent) agents. I seriously considered suicide.

He deserves it. The story is insanely well-written.

I hesitate to call it "great," considering some other literary works that generally receive that title, but it's definitely very good.

>>4604196
It's actually sort of stupidly simple, and makes a hell of a lot of sense.

It's on the first list, actually. I'd say that our publishing house is medium-sized.

>>4604139
There are some interesting things about it.

The problem is, I only feel comfortable giving the generic bits. The way the society is organized is very different from most Tolkien-style stuff, as is the main conflict. I just don't feel comfortable about posting about those aspects of the story.

I gained the usage of y'all due to a girl I dated for a while. I myself was born in Jersey, moved to Denver when I was six, and moved to a place that is shaded red on that map after I graduated college (which is where the publishing house is built.) I have never lived in a place that would be considered "the south"

Standard fantasy stuff, with a few twists I don't know if I can give away.

Characters are also fairly standard. There's the MC (who functions kind of light a Knight), a dragon (also a warrior in her country), a prince who is also a wizard (although magic works strangely in the universe), and some others.

I think it's safe to tell you that the general setting has the standard "Countries based on the race of inhabitants," but there's some differences -- The Dwarves, Elves, and Humans, for example, get along just fine and have many military and economic ties.

I don't really want to get into real detail.

>>4604111
We are on that list.

>>4604097
Not many. Anal doesn't happen in the book, though.

While I find the art amusing, we aren't planning on explicitly marketing the dragonlovin' in the novel

I think we're going to try and market to both genders. The novel definitely isn't a romance book.

It'd be kinda funny if either of those actually happened.

>>4604024
If there's ever a porn parody, I promise that I will purchase at least twenty copies. I'm not into dragon-sex but that shit will be too hilarious to not pass up.

>>4604032
We're planning on marketing the story based off its other merits, with maybe a small blurb about "even going so far as to pull off the ultimate betrayal of tradition in his search for the truth" or something.

Nope.

>>4603980
Yeah. Better to burn out than fade away or whatever, right?

>>4603993
I don't think we'll go that far. In order for controversy to happen, it needs to expand beyond the kind of people who already are into dragon-bonin'.

However, if it takes off, I'd wager that BD makes a toy out of it anyway.

>>4604010
Don't think I can tell you that right now. Maybe as it comes out.

I can promise you, it isn't. I had no fucking clue this was going to happen.

We have no idea what to title it, but I'll so post it here when we figure it out.

Also, if somebody wants to create a /tg/ thread or something, go ahead. I think they'd probably enjoy it.

>> No.4603846 [View]

My boss believes that the dragon-fucking gives the novel a "rebellious edge," something that is sure to make it appeal to teenagers and young adults. He rambled for a really long-ass time on how the controversy would only improve sales. He even suggested that going MORE explicit might be a good idea.

I think he might be fucking crazy, but he had a lot of good points.

Anyway, he's the boss, so we're publishing it. It'll probably take a year or so to edit and prepare, but when it comes out, we're going to market it HARD. I think he's planning on diverting a big portion of our budget to it. We're going to tell the author this tomorrow.

Also, he suggested that we use viral marketing to create hype before the book releases. So I MIGHT be able to convince him to let me post excerpts here before it's out.

Note: I had no idea about the viraling thing before today. I normally hate it when companies try to do that, because it's always shitty, but I think I can let it slide if it means I can post bits for you to read. Would y'all be cool with that?
