he's a good writer if you like magical realism

>> No.3983186 [View]

you might like robert walser

(sebald loved him)

>> No.3661341 [View]

>>3661326

probably true, been a few years since i read it

rushdie certainly isnt a necessity but worth a look if you like magical realism which i do quite like

>> No.3661316 [View]

>>3661303

if you are ok with magical realism then yes hes a good read

midnights children is good

the man without qualities is great

i've seen it brought up a few times on lit tbf

>> No.3648770 [View]

>>3648748

yeah it's not good

'important' as the first novel by a woman (supposedly? might be disputed), and a little less racist than plenty of texts of the time i guess

don't rate chabon that highly, he's ok i guess

crying lot is...ok. much better pynchon out there

channel orange is a good album tbf

1. norton anthology of theory and criticism, norton anthology of english lit VIII vol 2, steven pile - real cities, city images ed. by, mary ann caws, lefebvre - the urban revolution, aragon - paris peasant

2. none

3. benjamin - the arcades project, dictionary, bhabha - the location of culture, butler - gender trouble, fanon - black skin, white masks, berger - ways of seeing

top of chest of draws/bookshelves full as well obviously

>> No.3404229 [View]

>>3404223

why did you gender this

>> No.3404062 [View]

>>3404049

fair enough, i can understand how that it is a bit contentious

along the same lines i would classify the quarto version of king lear as a separate text to the folio version

in the same way bond's lear is a different text, but i feel this is a more minor quibble

>>3404050

yeah i really need to read baudelaire's translation as i love both him and poe

although i haven't read or spoken a word of french in 6 months so i don't know if i can be bothered

>> No.3404041 [View]

>>3404033

you can judge it in relation to other texts and whatever else, even the text it was translated from

of course no text is an island

>> No.3404023 [View]

>>3403980

yes and then there are others where people say the translation has added something, like the rubaiyat of omar khayyam

i will keep stating it because it's true: it becomes a different text to be judged on its own, it may well be shit (i.e. baudelaire translation lose a lot) but an a priori assumption is stupid

>>3403988

how about just judging the text on its own merits and how we react to it, instead of providing a false signification to something

>>3403995

yes, we get a new perception of it well done

one that is different and should be treated as such

whether it is better is worse can be judged after you have actually read the two texts to be able to form a knowledgeable opinion

>>3404001

the author is dead, get over it

>> No.3403979 [View]

>>3403968

and also feeding into the myth of authorial intent and authority

>> No.3403968 [View]

>>3403948

please explain how a translation automatically means its dumbed down

it becomes a different text, perhaps better, perhaps worse, but you cannot be sure unless you learn both languages and analyse for yourself

you're creating a hierarchy that places unjust significance on chronology

>> No.3403945 [View]

>giving transcendental significance to an 'original' work

it becomes a different text and idgaf i'll still enjoy it

>> No.3403797 [View]

the only real con is a potential slippery slope argument and worrying about disabled people getting killed off too easily / close relatives saying to kill them off unnecessarily

as stated it's a 'slippery slope' so a bad argument and shouldn't be an issue with proper oversight
