1 - The military is making cuts to the amount of enlisted personnel its taking in and is over filling quotas because so many people are trying to do this
2 - The Peace Corp is also doing this, but the Peace Corp is mostly volunteer or pays through education, and in a depression the best that can do for you is keep you busy until things upturn a little and you can use that education.

You know during the majority of my life I am actually quite proud to identify with America, not because of stupid patriotism or nationalism, but because its a nation of people not joined by blood or necessity or heritage or language or culture, but opportunity and ideals. learn multiple styles. learn from multiple masters. I know the kind of artist you are talking about, and I also know a lot of artists I've taken art classes with who only learn from masters, but they learn multiple styles and multiple artists and have great range and skill, and have learned to draw/paint/ink/whatever there medium of choice from life later. They aren't in the majority, most people are taught from life, but that doesn't make it a less valid way to learn. With writing I am to understand this is the most common way however.

The consensus of the anons in this thread is take the learn from masters approach. If you want to learn from life, write and read the kind of things in every day life, the things in life you read. Ticker at the bottom of a news program. News Paper articles. TV program descriptions. Ads. Signs. etc. Read them and practice writing them and hone your word craft from those things if you want to learn from life. Also learn to write dialogue from everyday talk. Writers have done this before. I'm sure you could if you want to learn to write from life.
