I remember reading the Dear Esther transcript before I got into literature and being completely blown away. I want to revisit it but I'm afraid to ruin the nostalgia.

It was pretty good I guess.

This is a suicide note that I would read and not feel really depressed about. It seems like you've had a great life and you genuinely love the people you keep close.

Nah, I can read two chapters. The other people in the seminar will have read the entire Histories and I will obviously have only read two chapters. I just want something I can read to get an idea of what's in the other seven books, so I'm up to scratch with the people that have read the entire book.

Wow, lot's of hostility in this thread. Those are some hot assumptions you made there, friend. You kind of set yourself up in an odd situation; if I told you I have had sex you wouldn't believe me because you've already decided that I haven't. But if I told you I haven't had sex you'd walk away with a sense of superiority and the satisfaction of knowing that you were right about something on the internet. So unless I procure a picture of my ex's broken hymen (I can't), you win.

Good game, anon :)

I don't want to start another thread on this so I'll just ask in a greek-related thread.

I have to read The Histories of Herodotus for a seminar I'm sitting in on next week. To be specific, the 8th and 9th books. Does /lit/ have any advice on tackling this? Are there any decent secondary sources that I can get a basic gist of the book from? I want a general feel for the book outside of what I'm reading since I'll be in a seminar with people that have already read the whole thing.

I am merely stating my opinion, friend. No need to be angered. If you believe that photography has some artistic merit then I implore you to elaborate.

I've always considered photography the most plebeian of the art forms.

I dunno man, women are soft and they smell nice. And sex is usually good.

Also the thing you posted seriously overlooks everything emotional about a relationship. If you break down any relationship to investment/physical reward it's probably going to be pretty shit. But you haven't even begun to feel unless you've experienced love and heartbreak.

That's definitely the Satanic Bible by Tony LaVey.

What about that novel where the asian guy steals from American Apparel?

Not sure, OP. But on a related note, does anybody know the name of that book where Zarathustra goes around speaking to people?

Yeah I heartily recommend it. It's a good, depressing, fall read.

Picked this up because /lit/ was raving over it a while back. I didn't think it was bawl worthy, but it's definitely the most depressing book I've ever read.

I had an idea for a story where a guy gets on an imageboard and wastes multiple hours on it while going into superfluous detail about all the various arguments and ideologies presented. After a while he decides to go to the bathroom, and when he tries to flip the light switch on it doesn't work and he realizes that HE'S DREAMING!!!!!!![\spoiler]. Then he wakes up from the dream and he's at his computer browsing the original imageboard! It would be really crazy, some deuce ex machine stuff.

Try reading or listening to something on the philosopher you want to learn about, rather than going straight to the philosopher him/herself. The Partially Examined Life is good at giving a basic rundown on a text within an hour or so while still being entertaining. So you can listen to your funny podcast, then sit down and read the text with an idea of what you're getting into and what to pay attention to. Or just read a wikipedia article or something.

Personally, I've become more depressed and cynical the more I've read. I think my problem is that I know reading is my escapism in the same way that some people play video games or watch T.V to avoid their own shitty lives.

But if you're a happy well-adjusted human being then reading some pedestrian literature might make you a bit happier and a bit more knowledgeable. Also, a fringe board on a fringe imageboard is a bad place to ask for advice and experience on most things, maybe you should ask a good friend.

I was having a mildly depressive bout a few weeks back and Siddhartha really helped me through it. But if you're seriously depressed do what >>5473641 said and see a doctor about it.

I don't think I got the full erotic experience that a majority of /lit/ seems to have gotten from Lolita. Yeah, the way Humbert describes Dolores is beautiful, yeah it's kind of hot at times. But for a majority of the book Dolores is either an average, absentminded 9-14 year old or a complete brat. Humbert's relationship with Dolores is really fucked up on both his and her part which is something that /lit/ ignores a lot. Yes, Lolita shows how beautiful Humbert's view of Dolores is, but it also shows how dark and disgusting it is.
