OK lets leave out the Indian Subcontinent.

Here's a few authors that come to mind straight away:

Amin Maalouf
Alaa Al Aswany
Naguib Mahfouz
Orhan Pamuk
Mahmoud Darwish
Kadare
Elif Shafak
Amos Oz
Omar Khayyám
Ahdaf Soueif
Raja Shehadeh

He is a master of disguise after all, and I don't recall any story in which he engages in intercourse with a lady. So it's a possibility....

In terms of fiction I read mostly 'Western' books.

Murakami is OK. Adds some variety to the stuff I normally read and reading his books is an enjoyable experience :)
So far I've read:
Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World
Kafka on the Shore
Norwegian Wood
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
South of the Border, West of the Sun

After The Quake was good too

But they all just seem to blend into one and I have a hard time recalling which book is which. I'm looking forward to his next book 1Q84.
