I know a few marine biologists who might disagree with that.

I don't really, I just said that to get my point across.

I started reading it today, I'm only about 30 pages in, this is much heavier going than I thought. I think even for the 19th century, this language is quite complex and flowery. it's already made me smile and laugh a few times, though. I know this board is (surprisingly) quite into this book.

I don't even know what a polyphonic novel is. I'm so stupid. Worse ever than Quentin.

City of Glass, Ghosts, that kind of thing. The stories are never long or particularly well-fleshed out, but they do deal well with identity, storytelling, freedom of action, and the emptiness of life. I also like his postmodern names for characters, like Blue, Black and White, and the way he uses them matter-of-factly, as if they're just pseudonymic.

HIs stuff like In The Country of Last Things is better written (and thankfully longer), but less interesting and insightful.

Books are the only form of art where apparently intelligent people will say your opinions are 'right' or 'wrong'. It won't happen in music, games, or movies.

I laughed at the Doom 3 reference.

This thread is becoming interesting, and is actually about literature. I didn't think many people would reply.

First Tao Lin post I've seen in 3 days. I'm amazed /lit/ went that long. Maybe /lit/ is changing.

People will hate me for saying this, but I dislike Pynchon a lot. His prose is almost impossible to understand, if there's even anything to understand. The only thing I kind of like by him, is Against The Day. GR was a trainwreck, no matter how many times I reread sections, I still didn't know what was going on. Vineland was not too bad, but still below average. Didn't like V or 49 much.

I sometimes wonder who all these people who like him are.

I know what it means, yesyesyes, I'm saying it's a byword for posh and / or rich. It's usually 'old money'. Personally, I want to marry a WASP heiress.

I didn't mean WASP literally, I meant WASP as a byword for a posh, wealthy person (at least that's how people in the UK use it).

Franzen writes about white people problems (and does this well, I think). Just don't read The Twenty-Seventh City.
