Don't let an old man with a long beard philosophizing and proclaiming deceive you; he's a sexist.

but now you're interpreting the texts of histories, which are mostly based on firsthand accounts. All human knowledge is based on texts, and different texts inform our interpretations of others, etc. and so forth.

texts interact with a culture. we'll never know what Shakespeare really meant about tons of issues, but we can still interact with the text of his works in a meaningful way.

texts speak for themselves in the mind states of the interpreters throughout the ages.

people with funny mustaches read New Yorker articles out of their basements. Then we'd talk about GRRM for awhile. Then we'd rage about post-modernism. Pretty repetitive, really, but it was alright.

Honestly, there's no reason not to read the bible, both testaments. Can you name a more important book in the history of Western Literature? I can't.

However, the best way to really learn it is to suffer through a lifetime of bible schooling and church, and grandmothers reprimanding you over the dinner table.

Bukowski has absolutely nothing to say and never has. Writing about lower class life isn't a fresh idea. Degradation and squalor have been the topics of everyone from Marquis De Sade to Dickens.

But Bukowski doesn't even have the decency to make his prose beautiful as they did. Writing in a bald imitation of Hemingway and using the word 'fuck' a lot does not contribute anything to 'modernism'.

He has nothing to say politically, socially, personally, philosophically or stylistically.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Love by Raymond Craver.

He's the natural heir to the legacy of writers like Steinbeck and Hemmingway, and his short stories are the best contemporary writing that exists in America today.

Shitty imitation of John Fante who was a shitty imitation of Hemingway.

I'm so sick of every sexist pig who thinks he knows anything about 'literature' telling me how great Bukowski is.
