The venerable Verum reposes under an oak on a cool summer day and whiles upon the vicissitudes of sound. Unbeknownst to him, two young men happen upon his very path and are discussing the veracity of an after-life.

“Be that as it may, I have yet any reason to believe such superstitions as that of an after-life.”

“How so? If you acknowledge your having a being different from that of your body then whence did this being come from? Should it not be from some ’where’ different than here?”

“No, it shouldn’t be. Why do you dare to imply to know all the powers that comprise this world, Jakob? Yes I have a being different from that of my body, but to infer that that implies a ‘world’ different than here is, forgive me, childish. Would you say the same of fire? Is fire other-worldly?”

J:”What? No. Why would I say that, Leon?”
L:“Because as far as I can tell, Jakob, fire arises from a being wholly different than it.”
J:”What do you mean?”
L:”I mean that the nature of fire—its brightness, its heat, its movement—is different from that of the wood that gives it life. Yet for all that, fire still burns.”
J:”Why, you don’t mean to say that one can give what one has not? Do you?”
L:”No. Quite the contrary. I mean to say our ignorance of phenomenon should not be any reason to—”
Just then Leon tripped on what felt like a log.

J:”Are you alright, Leon? Let me help you up.”
L:”Yes, yes. I am quite alright. Thank you Jakob. Just tripped over a log is all.”, he said with a slight smile and crimson face.
J:”Or rather a person!”
L:”Say again?”, asked Leon, eyes wide.
V:”Haha! You needn’t worry Leon! You hadn’t tripped over a corpse. I assure you. Though even if you had, I am not so sure dread should have been the proper response.”
L:”Oh my goodness; Forgive me Verum. I hadn’t seen you. I was just in the middle of a conversation with Jakob, and what with the shade of this oak—”
V: Verum flashed one of his palms and placed the other on Leon’s shoulder, “I know. I know. I heard you both coming, but in my own reverie your voices were but a distant echo. It seems we are both at fault here. Forgive me, Leon.”
L:”Of course, Verum. You needn’t ask. If anyth—”
J:”Okay! Okay! That is all fine and dandy,”, interjected Jakob “but Master Verum” emphasizing ‘Master’ with a playful irony, ”what did you mean by ‘I am not so sure dread should have been the proper response’?”
V:”Why nothing too amazing my dear Jakob. It’s just that I have reason to suspect something wondrous follows after death.”
L:”Like what?”, asked Leon, dusting himself off.
V:”That, I’m afraid I can’t answer. I don’t know exactly what follows, but I am sure it is something akin to heightening.”
