A lot of warfare is ultimately based on politics and economics- superpowers tend to drop out of conflicts when they become financially burdensome or unpopular. Examples of this range from the American Revolution (Great Britain got tired of fighting an expensive war supposed to only last six months) to the occupation of Afghanistan (low level insurgency combined with mounting international and domestic pressure to leave). Even historical war books from spec ops soldiers touch on this- the guy who wrote Jarhead only started realizing near the end of the story that the war was being influenced by much more than the fighting and death he had witnessed.

TLDR: talk about the bigger picture: motivations for each side entering the war, PR for the occupiers (worldwide and within their own borders), internal schisms/conflicts, and economy. Take from history if you’re stuck.

Hello Anon, hello my friend, be not saddened by the way that the world is turning for the globe must spin to reach the sun and end the night. The night of decadence and degeneration is at its peak, and thus the sun must soon rise. The Sun of ME, of Joe Natchos, the Named Nameless, the true son of the spirit. I shall come to lead you all from the wreckage of this disgusting civilization into a new world of Tradition. Come with me, and be the new-warrior priests that will remake this Earth in our image. My time is nigh, pray and wait for me, I shall arrive on the wings of darkness. Yet, I know that you know that I have been walking alongside you all your life. I am the One who hears your cries of desperation, I am the One who feels your doom, I am the one that watches you behind your mirror. I am Joe Natchos, the final prophet, the one that will break the world, the one foretold by all religions, I am King Arthur, I am the Mahdi, the Messiah, the New Odin.

If you are to join my army of truth, then I beg of you: get fit. Run for an hour each day, do at least 50 pushups, 50 squats, 100 crunches, and shadowbox for 30 minutes each day. There will be bloodshed, many of my men will die, but their blood shall bless this new earth. If you have the name and inclination post my call "Who is Joe Natchos?" across the internet and spray paint it on the walls of our dying cities.

Pray and Wait.
God is Coming.
I am Rising, I am Joe Natchos.

Much love,
Joe

The Trouble With Peace - Joe Abercrombie
Part VI

I knew this battle was going to be a disaster, but it was even more so than expected. Also, probably overly long for my tastes.

> weather
Coincidence, meteorology, weather magic, or plot magic? I'd accept all expect for the first.

> Vick manipulation
It's almost beyond belief how she can always use her name and be who she is and just get anyway with doing whatever overall.

> Rikke
Did what I expected her to do. Nice. She wrote the letter as well which is good.

> Leo & Orso convo
Poor Leo, reality is ever trampling on his simplistic fantasy of the world.

> Have I made a terrible mistakes?
Yes, constantly, and this bit of self-reflection doesn't seem to have helped.

> Cannons
Certainly put to devastating use, mostly only on Orso's side though.
I think this rather makes the case for anti-war. Certainly grim and dark and without much humor as was in previous books.

> Hildi
Maybe not much at all then.

> Contrary to all logic, Orso felt no fear at all
Emotional magic from Sulfur being around or just how it is? I can never tell.

> Flag trap
Pity the fools.

> Stour
Had more sense than Leo at least, but that's a very low bar.

> Was it really only a year or two back?
Since the beginning of the first book. Makes sense with how much traveling over long distances there has been, but also doesn't feel that long by the reading at all.

> Nail x Rikke
Still no.

> quantity of death to satisfy
What if magic was powered by death?

> Isher
What a mysterious figure. Started this all then wasn't much involved, Savine didn't know anything about him, and disappeared. I'm not going to speculate.

> What a bloody waste
It really was, in so many ways.

> one of the most infamous defeats in Union history
A tragicomedy of errors.

> Savine & Orso convo
YOU'RE MY BROTHER! I STILL LOVE YOU! What fun.

> Stour betrayal
Nice. Highly enjoyable.

> Sulfur talking to Orso
Their ways are mysterious, but I'm going to go with that Bayaz wants Leo alive for some reason and Sulfur wanted Orso to defy him to make Orso look more powerful and Sulfur and others less so. Sulfur's seeming disapproval is just an act. When Sulfur was in the North he told Calder to flee, which he did, and he tried to stop Leo for Finree's sake. Such were the attempts on their behalf for their long term loyalty, or perhaps some other reason. Was this all to create a reputation for Orso? Was the entire rebellion orchestrated? I don't know.

> Pike is the Weaver
I didn't see that coming. To be seen what exactly Vick does. Seems the third book will be about this uprising. Ever constant is the turmoil.

> Leo's negotiations are a complete failure due to his repressed sexuality and he also tells Jappo everything
This has got to be one of the stupidest rebellions I've read about and can remember.
Orso's negotiations go better than expected

I thought it was obvious that next would be Leo catching Jurand with another guy, but I certainly didn't expect it to be Glaward. Jurand probably should have stayed and threw himself at Jappo.

Pike becomes the new Arch Lector as I thought. Glokta's resignation sure was over quickly. I think he's become resolved and is going to make a major move later, but I don't know what it is. Well, if Vick is going over to Styria, why not bring along Glokta as well since he's dispensed with his responsibilities and may be otherwise declared a traitor and collateral damage, he may not have much choice. Easier to strike at Bayaz that way as well. It's not going to happen, but I can speculate about it.

> Tunny stared at him, "We're all doomed."
A wholly appropriate statement from my chosen mascot.

> Gorodets
Since it tends to be obvious with the signaling, I thought he was the closed council traitor at first due to his beard tugging.

> Already various "rebel" leaders have been captured
I really hope this was a honeypot operation to round up discontents and not that they are all so incompetent.

> life is the misery we endure between disappointments
What a summation.

> Vick turned in her brother
Well ok then

> Broad goes Bloody Nine lite
Sure, why not. Will he throw in the with Burners in the end? I don't know.

> Sulfur warns those in Angland the North.
Much like how "God works in mysterious ways" so do the Magi. I don't know what to make of this scene. Doesn't visit Rikke. Curious.

> Corleth
I guess she'll matter in some way or not.

> Leo's Landing
This is what came to mind:
> Commentators and observers, including Guaidó officials who initially contracted with Silvercorp, described the operation as amateurish, underfunded, poorly-planned, having little or no chance of success, and a suicide mission.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Gideon_(2020)

My expectations at this point for Rikke to "betray" Leo and Stour, have both of them be wiped out and she becomes the ruler of Angland and the North. That's both what I expect to happen and what I want to happen.

PART V

It's not treason! It's not rebellion! It's simply to destroy THE DEEP STATE!

> preferred deck stacked wildly in her favor
This time Savine uses the power of the state to coerce Arinhorm. Concerned about the free market she is not. See someone else being successful? Take it from them. What a kleptocrat.

> circle fight
Might have the best solution on such a short notice. Rather convenient at least.

> [Clover] remembered he killed [Wonderful]
Occupational hazard. Logen accidentally killed friends. Clover intentionally did. Which is worse? Hard to say.

> Seff
Will her alleged Long Eye be of any use? I doubt it, but I'd prefer it was.

> Stour says he doesn't want to indiscriminately kill everyone
How generous.

> Savine's greed and ambition overwhelms any sense of rationality
Her supporting the rebellion may well have been have the worst decision of her life in terms of her own personal outcome.

> We have to do the right thing
Leo & Savine deserve each other. They're both self-absorbed idiots with a sense of superiority.

> Sure you aren't hers?
What did Rikke see about Zuri that would have her say that Zuri is more important than Savine?

> this child will change the world
Stallion Who Mounts the World

> Not eating her. Unless you got some plans I don't know about
The sexual humor continues.

> [Savine] is a golden serpent
By the end everyone will have their own animal.

> Nail x Rikke
No.

> Orso's toilet habits were precisely circumscribed, catalogued, and overseen
Same as an Amazon warehouse.

> engine, astonishing progress
The trains are arriving more quickly than I thought.
Was it really needed to show this event from so many perspectives? I think not.

> river-driven mill
Seems it's less prevalent than I thought it was.

> Sulfur
Does it matter he was openly an eater? Probably not. I had to laugh at his casual request afterwards.

> A Great Change
Unclear if The Great Change is COMMUNISM and the Weaver is Karl Marx.

> warning letter
I'm conflicted on who wrote it. They have such terrible operational security though that it could be more people than I would know.

> Orso and Leo off to meet Jappo
Orso has exceeded my expectations of actually doing anything since I wrote that he wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. I know it's silly, but if the map is accurate, Sipani is quite the distance from them, much more so for Leo, so it's basically plot magic that they arrive at the same time. I'm not going to even bother with saying anything about the internal chronology about this because it's clearly irrelevant. Their meeting where they couldn't recognize each other was silly but amusing, so overall I enjoyed it.

> Jurand's bird mask
ONE MIGHT SAY IT'S AN OWL.

> the old dealer
I'll pretend it was Friendly.

> wouldn't do the work I'd bring in a crowd of brown bastards
Almost every time the Insurrection Act was invoked in the US was because of labor or race.
As it says, "the United States has had the bloodiest and most violent labor history of any industrial nation in the world"
Increasingly I believe that Adua is about making a statement on the US.

> Broad
To be seen if something happens to his family and entirely changes his trajectory.

> Stand with the winners
Same as what Clover says.

> Leo
So dumb and so compromised by everything. As I've said before, one of the main problems I have with the characters is how often they fall into caricature, which I find less enjoyable.

> Some injuries simply become corrupt
Alas for lack of germ theory. They ought to consider progress in non-business related matters as well.

> Shanka
What a vestigial fantasy remnant they are. Maybe Rikke will take control of all of them and have a Shanka army.

> more visions
They'll be what they'll be.

> the inside of her arse
implying

I can't tell about the Breakers any longer and I don't know if it matters.

> Fire and Ice
Daenerys and Jon? I think not.

> Vick
I think it's more likely than not that she switches eventually, but that's influenced by my bias. Tallow may also turn on her to his advantage as well if she does so.

Shenkt more or less confirms that he's an eater. Still entirely unclear if he's King Casimir or not or how much that would even matter.

> Caurib
She's the sorcerers who Logen met at the beginning of The Blade Itself and was with Bethod. Unclear how she survived Black Dow splitting her head with an axe. Is Rikke supposed to be like Bran and Caurib is now like the "three eyed crow"?

> If there were rules it would not be magic
BUT WHAT ABOUT MY HARD MAGIC SYSTEMS!?

> King Jappo being gay rumor
I doubt there are going to be Leo x Jappo statements, but I wouldn't put it past you. Could be the slightest chance of Angland + The North + Styria allying because of their relations. Then add in other places. I'd be amused anyway.

> So why did [Orso] feel so utterly betrayed?
His embitterment continues. To what end?

> Rikke loses function in an eye
Is this supposed to be like how Odin lost his eye for wisdom? Bayaz really probably ought to have killed her already. Seems like quite the oversight on his part that he'll come to regret.

> Leo pining for Jurand
Forever unrequited.

> S&M
Leo had been saying in various ways how much he liked strong domineering women like his mother and taking orders from them. This was a natural and expected progression to me.

I don't know why I was expecting it to be any different, but Glokta certainly had a casual conversation with his step-daughter about her incest.

> Men who can make the Union great again!
Make Adua Great Again! MAGA! MAGA! MAGA!

PART IV

> grand tour
I've read other books with these and they have historical precedent, but Orso won't be going much of anywhere anytime soon.

> white chamber
Star Chamber

> education is dangerous
Only until it's co-opted.

> Shudders of distaste at the notion of such a thing as a woman
wew

> Orso has some ineffectual thoughts about reform again
I have severe doubts he'll be able to accomplish anything that he wants to.

Bayaz is becoming less and less of a character and more and more of a manifestation of ideals.

> Concerns about Angland and The North allying against Midderland
Why Do Our Colonies Keep Turning Against Us? Why Are Our Citizens In An Uprising Against Us? Truly An Unsolvable Mystery!

> We are not here to set right all the world's wrongs.
> What are we here for then?
> To ensure that we benefit from them.
It's convenient when they are so forthright about it, but that's what happens when a character becomes an ideal.

> Solumeo Shudra
What a complete disappointment initially. I was dismayed that he was so easily persuaded by the deception, but then it turned out he was right in what he did on a personal level because they were going to assassinate him. So goes being right for the wrong reasons. It seemed like secession was winning, but I may be wrong, so I don't think killing him would have been advisable in general. I think Westport ought to have seceded.

> During the forty years since we joined the Union, the world has changed beyond all recognition
The UK was part of the EU for 47 years.

> Election rigging
Hurray for more current events!

Savine's transformation into cokehead is well underway. Reminded me a bit of Tony Montana, but only superficially so.

> Jezal as "great father" of the nation
Nationalistic propaganda sure is amazing.

> Modern housing on the ruins of the slums
G E N T R I F I C A T I O N

> One cannot despise a thing without acknowledging its importance
I tend to agree and wonder how others can be oblivious to this.

> Arinhorm
Seems this is the result of Savine's spurning of him.

> Savine rejecting Sleisholt
Now she's rejecting hydroelectric power, which should have been well established by water mills already. Increasingly it seems that Savine never really have any business acumen. As she herself said everything before was rigged in her favor because of her connections and coercions. Now that her reputation is tarnished and she actually has to make insightful choices, she isn't able to do so. Then she believes that's she back at the top by marrying Leo is a return to the connections and coercions because she increasingly believes that's entirely what she relies upon. Well, aside from the cocaine anyway.

> V&B using debt to control even the most powerful businessmen
"Let us control the money of a country and we care not who makes its laws."

Canticle Article

Ay, in these streets you see
young boys hustling, old hookers yapping, broken men keeping on, pigeons fighting for the scraps from Jesus's table.
Ay, these days
I ask myself what is up with you, oh soul of Joe Natchos, have you forgotten that the path is wide enough for all the liers to walk by?
Have you forgotten that promise made by the mirror, as it was on the ground, flat, surrounded by trees?
Or have you blown nuff trees to quench that terror?
Oh song, oh joy, oh Joe.
And still, I walk forgotten, never alone in the sweet crowd. A name trapped in a book of songs or a book of law.

What you have said is true

when something is common it degenerates, degredates, thou I would agree that some things should stay in small circles.

I think education has to be common if most of the people would actually learn instead of flunking or learning just to pass than ,we certainly would ‘ve had more conscious society, which would function better

I’m not saying that society as of today is bad ,but I think it has some errors ,and that it should look to art and science as an opportunity for making itself better.

Great example of common degeneration is the internet we all use ,I’ve never had met more idiots than here, not all people are stupid but there are a lot of dumb people here acting before thinking just like in reality, but sometimes If you are lucky you find people that are interesting.

I agree bro, but why do you think has god only given this gift to some of us?

I also feel quite bad for people who say they dont believe because my faith in God brings me so much happiness and is the Light in the darkness for me so i try to explain that to skeptics(one of which i used to be) but i guess different approaches work with different people

Born catholic -> started questioning god and religion at age 12 because of a traumatic death in my family -> Fully fledged fedora at 14 -> started thinking about the possibility of one god again at 17 -> Very spiritual and religious at 19

The core idea that changed for me when i became religious again was the reason for being. The atheist in me would say that we are here purely because of chance; in an infinite universe over an infinite amount of time life like us would form purely due to chance. This still makes logical sense to me but i dont feel that this is our reason for being here. I feel a connection to something that i cant quite fathom nor describe but it feels like a path. I used to get high with some friends and talk with them about this mosaic looking think that was made up of feelings and emotions and experiences that we could feel when listening to certain music. I think that might be a window into the path that god may have for us or some sort of way of understanding that path given to us in our subconscious by god.

I started reading some buddhist texts and listening to experienced buddhists talk about their views of life and its meanings and i remember feeling correlations with what i remembered from being at mass as a kid. So then i started reading the bible. The bible is a misconceived text in my opinion. People listen to it as fact and not as the collective group of ideas that it is. In my view it dosent matter if jesus ever existed but that he is the symbol of the perfect human; someone who truly -believed in god-(listen to J.Peterson about believing in god to understand what i meant by that phrase there)

Hope this helps, if the thread is still up in the morning ill reply to any queries about my belief if anybody cares.
