Ben wasn't a good writer though. Writers loved and acknowledged on this board are geniuses, people born with talent in a sense, more like developed talent because of special circumstances of their character, which might as well be a given-born-with talent because you cannot develop it conciously.
Writing exercises might make you a good writer, might make you comfy in a sense, might make you serious and reasonable; but it won't make you a genius. If you have nothing to write about, which most people here do not, and no reason to write but for the sake of writing, for coping or anything the like, then your work won't be that good. The prose might be nice and the topic interesting, but you cannot steal genius from a mind which it does not possess, force a mind to produce it without reason to do so.
This is the academic way to learn writing, this might prove positive, will be great for most people, but at the off chance that you are genius, for which you require proof in writen work and ability, this will harm you more than help you; give us all, normal folk, hope to be great, which will just be disappointed.
A genius writer will have to sit down, and all things being well, produce brilliant unfinished ideas, and all things being great produce a masterpiece:
SO -- sit down and see if you are genius, people of lit, if not do as he says; if you are, get your shit together and write something you want to say--for us to read.
