In various videos he has mentioned topics that are popular here. And it seems to be correlated (no data, sorry), that topics that get popular on here seem to be mentioned in his videos.
What triggered this for me is in a video he mentions about "mind's eye", or a lack of, which is a common topic here, particularly in the last year.
The way he discusses it is almost as if he is answering questions or statements we posted in the thread.

The other theory I have is that he must be scraping data from lots of websites related to concepts that wishes to discuss on his videos.
And then displays the information in some sort of application or RSS feed.

So everyone, say hello to Tom Scott.
I think linguistics is really cool.

The more likely explanation is that 4chan isn't a vacuum and topics which come up here also come up in other popsci (yes sci is popsci) discussions.
>in a video he mentions about "mind's eye", or a lack of, which is a common topic here, particularly in the last year.
This was reported on in many places before it showed up here. I heard it on the nature podcast months before the trend of daily threads showed up. And even those threads often used an image of a fucking twitter screenshot. Twitter Anon, you really think this is a secret clubhouse when it sources its topics from twitter?

/sci/ seems decent at maths but it's awful at other scientific fields. Probably because they require collaboration and actually going to university, something which many here fail to do.

Yep. Agree.
But the possibility that he has been or is a degenerate like us is pretty entertaining.

Yeah he mentioned that he used to browse newsgroups intensively and nowadays 4chan is basically the equivalent of them. I'm about 60% sure he browses 4chan, at least occasionally.
If you're reading this, hi Tom.

Well, everyone knows about 4chan. It's a site that heavily influences even American election results.
I am sure Tom has visitted here at least once.
Maybe he liked it and stayed, just like the rest of us.

Tom if you want to be a cool guy you can include a seemingly innocuous nod to us. Say anything about owls in your next video and we'll know you're one of us.

He talks about things """popular""" here because the overlap between our shitty pop-sci and reddit's shitty pop-sci is larger than we'd like to admit

4chan really tries hard to be unique, but I see images and topics cross-posted daily between le reddit and 4chan. Literally the same memes, same days, same topics. One is just more family friendly than the other.
4chan is an echo chamber of pop-sci "tell-me-what-to-think-about-today-social-media" with a teen-edge slant.

There is not a single other board I frequent on which YT personalities get their threads more frequently than /sci/.
I think even /pol/ commits this sin less often.
