>have robots scoop up dirt
NASA swampworks has been developing a rover that does this for around a decade. Its called RASSOR
>https://blogs.nasa.gov/kennedy/2016/10/03/rassor-marco-polo-demonstrate-resource-utilization-on-mars/
>https://blogs.nasa.gov/kennedy/tag/rassor/
This video is a swampworks engineer talking about it as well as the printing and collaborations they have for the project. this video was 3 years ago
>https://youtu.be/OQt1oG21h4I
this is a video of the old design like a decade ago
>https://youtu.be/d3zRvl2LYJ4
if you search youtube for this past year you will find all the design change proposals for the buckets. Which NASA has crowdsourced just like they did for the 3D printing.
Its definitely a challenge but its been in the works for a long time and is further along then people think.

>all with minimal human assistance?
Yes that is what They attempted to do in the 3d printing challenge, same with Swampworks but we will highlight the challenge because it was done under crazy time restraints with the goal of being entirely autonomous or remote.

Its also being done in plenty of other places.

As for in a vacuum also yes they have proven it with tests on earth
>https://3dprintingindustry.com/news/3d-printing-in-the-vacuum-of-space-now-possible-from-made-in-space-55309

>And can they print shit basically using all lunar resources rather than importing a bunch of plastic or water?
Yes they can
Penn state did it with simulated Marscrete. check out this video that talks about it.
Mooncrete has been around for a very long time and also can work in printers. Some designs do consider polymers or water(ice can most likely be found on both the moon and mars) but others do not. I am not sure what this moon base program is considering
>https://www.researchgate.net/publication/283048239_Advances_in_manufacture_of_Mooncrete_-_a_Review
>https://features.miami.edu/2019/moon-landing/using-mooncrete-for-building-blocks-on-the-moon/index.html
>https://canada.constructconnect.com/dcn/news/technology/2017/07/mooncrete-nasa-discovery-could-pave-the-way-for-future-extraterrestrial-building-1025975w
pic related is mooncrete made decades ago and they already have practice printing concrete. This video is the company meant for the moonbase printing at camp pendleton.

So basically as shown this technology is already here, has shown proof of concept and is available to NASA. It just has to be put together and polished into a single project. That project is the ICON- BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group-SEArch+ collaboration with NASA. Since the first landing on the moon is not for another 4 to 5 years at least that means that this project has the better part of a decade to flesh out their plan. That makes this project not only doable but Probable.

Stop calling it additive manufacturing. Its 3D printing. Its overhyped as it is, and regardless, the fact that you have to shill some vague irrelevant side applications no one cares about just shows you dont believe in your own product, so you foolishly stack on dubious side benefits to tilt the scale. Its not a good sales strategy. Accept it, some plastic pineapples are hydroponic farms are a very low point for NASA compared to the heyday of the apollo program.

Printing solves litterally all problems with space travel.

All you have to do is just put a printer up then you just shovel dirt in and print everything you need.

You can print food, cars, funko pops(YAY!), TV, video games, houses, dildos, and UPVOTES!

Printing makes space travel much cheaper too, because you can just scan and print people!

thats because ingress protection ratings and certification and the technologies developed to achieve those were not a thing back then. the new "suit port" space suits will never enter any part of the habitat and remain outside of the base/rover, mounted from their backs on the outside of the suit port, to be entered through a hatch on the back. this saves space inside the station/rover because the suit wont have to be stowed away inside, and putting it on is easier this way since it needs a lot of space to do so, current eva suits are a pain in the ass and take a long time to put on. the suit port airlock also acts as pressurized service bay for the suits if you would have to to maintenance work on them.

3d printed homes and structures have been done on earth. Also what are you talking about a science outpost? Because we have a lot of those on earth. This will have a ton of applications for earth so you are either a retard or being intentionally retarded.

why the fuck do you care about it unless you work at SpaceX? Realistically you can't do anything about it and it doesn't affect you. It might work, it might not. Now crack open a cold one. And remember, falcon heavy still exists.

Because SpaceX is lighting a fire under the ass of the entire industry and causing real changes. If starship works then it will mean the end of billions in tax dollar waste for launch platforms and the end of empty promises of space exploration in the very distant future. Also the falcon9 launch capabilities are changing my industry

Is there anyone more pathetic and useless than a fucking oldspace engineer? Idk how they can tell people what the do for a living without feeling immense shame.

It spreads awareness to the public about the welfare niggers at oldspace burning taxpayer dollars to do high school level engineering

Prove me wrong, space lego is better than printing. Printing on the Moon either requires lots of water(best used for rocket prop instead), importing plastic from home, extracting sulfur from dirt which requires lots of surface infrastructure, or sintering dirt. Sintered dirt is a bit brittle though. But if we make the dirt into bricks, then one small fracture can't propagate through everything and fug everything up. Arch like structures with interlocking bricks can support pressure loads. Pic and link related:

Well the printfags at nasa actually talk about sintering for a launchpad but idk if it would be very easy to build a hab that way

Will we have enough time on earth to conquer the stars? Well if we conquer the moon we can probably do the rest... I am scared. I don't want the human race to go
