NTP vehicles used as surface to orbit launchers around icy moons makes too much sense to ignore. The ability to produce an entire round-trip's worth of propellant in a day with a small power supply, or less than an hour with a moderately large power supply, is too useful a property to ignore. For chemical propellants the time needed to generate them is measured in months.

If the Isp numbers are anything like I've seen before for ammonia NTPs, this isn't true at all. You're talking about carrying a nuclear reactor for sub-300s performance. I've been playing Ksp for over a decade and I have never once launched from Eve back to orbit, nor sent kerbals down to the surface.

spore was a weird one. kind of scammy, but really I think they were just overambitious and wasted a lot of time. I still have the engine they made for generating galaxies, and it's weirdly overcomplicated and abstract for what they really should have done ( you design what are essentially cellular automata on a radial 'field' ).

It wasn't that much effort honestly, once you have 1 colony there and the large cargo bay you can just use the heat and air tools to manipulate the T score and stabilize it with plants and animals you carry at all times. Then you throw down the next two colony packs plus a spice storage and uber turret, buy a recharge, and go to the next planet.
Repeat process for hours while watching youtube videos on second monitor. Every now and then take a break to annihilate an enemy alien empire by strafing their T1 (lol) colonies with megabombs. Always capture their home planet though, since all their cities convert into your colonies, which means captured home planets output spice at massive rates plus have way more storage.

Spore was a semi-disappointment, it really felt like there was no communication between any of the teams during development, and you could see almost exactly how it got gutted into a cutesy kid friendly game right before launch. I played the shit out of it though, it was a good game for all its flaws, and nothing else has been like it again. The idea of a god game, but you have to build yourself all the way up from a single cell is perfect. Spore was billed as the most immersive simulation game of all time though, and it really never was that. The stats were all pretty simple, the design of your creatures and spaceships was almost entirely aesthetic, it wasn't some hard science optimization game.
Scientist was by far the best alignment, and the gravity wave was cool as hell.

What spore needed was the ability to command groups of NPC vessels in the space stage like units in the city stage, alongside the ability to jump into controlling a single character just like the actual game had. It became incredibly annoying to have to do every task personally, especially military defense. Even if you put an uberturret on a planet you still got the alerts and had to show up to prevent negative consequences, it just made defense easier once you arrived. Eco collapse stuff was also annoying.

This is exactly what NASA should be about going forward. Dumping gooberment money into R&D. They’re doing it in part with SX collaboration for things like depots and orbital refueling. But they should also build, test, and varify things like this that SX doesn’t have the time nor money to do on their own. This is why merlin was GG and partly why raptor isn’t an aerospike. JAXA has done rotation detonation engines before too which is cool

I don't think it is really. Only a fraction of the cost was spent during formulation. Note that Perseverance wasn't cheaper than Curiosity. It would cost billions and astrophysics was already fucked by JWST eating up an additional decade of budget. It would be best to build something new and complimentary, to do things JWST can't (x-ray, UV, habitable planets..).
