Self-evidently based post.

NTP vehicles used as surface to orbit launchers around icy moons makes too much sense to ignore. The ability to produce an entire round-trip's worth of propellant in a day with a small power supply, or less than an hour with a moderately large power supply, is too useful a property to ignore. For chemical propellants the time needed to generate them is measured in months.

If the Isp numbers are anything like I've seen before for ammonia NTPs, this isn't true at all. You're talking about carrying a nuclear reactor for sub-300s performance. I could be misremembering, but I'm pretty sure most non-hydrogen options are pretty trash to the point that it makes more sense to use a traditional rocket engine instead.

I'd be surprised if ULA gets half of that. They're going to be lucky to get two Vulcan launches before 2024 and Atlas V has never flown more than 9 times in a single year. Getting anywhere close to that is going to require Amazon finalize their Kupier design and go into mass production. Seeing as the first prototype hardware isn't going to fly until Vulcan does I'm not thinking that's very likely.

Gentlemen, I somewhat believe in the “other options” meme. But there is absolutely no reason for National Team SLD lander to exist and I just know it’s going to be picked for pure grift reasons.
There aren’t enough Artemis missions planned to warrant two landers, and NASA got a huge lander well beyond their expectations for a fraction of the price they were expecting to pay. The fact that congress did a 180 and said “mmmmm you know what we need a second option after all” is retarded beyond words

I was thinking, relativity could offer a cheap mass produced way to develop ballistic missiles with a hypersonic warhead

China, Russia and USA/DARPA have these programs but they are incredibly expensive

3D printing brings the cost down and relativity says they can make a rocket from raw material in 60 days

They would need someone to make the warhead though. Maybe they can print that too

Maybe in Ksp 2 I'll build an Eve surface colony for the fun of it and the fact that it makes designing a surface to orbit launcher much easier. spore was a weird one. kind of scammy, but really I think they were just overambitious and wasted a lot of time. I still have the engine they made for generating galaxies, and it's weirdly overcomplicated and abstract for what they really should have done ( you design what are essentially cellular automata on a radial 'field' ).

>> No.15155016

>>15154994
It wasn't that much effort honestly, once you have 1 colony there and the large cargo bay you can just use the heat and air tools to manipulate the T score and stabilize it with plants and animals you carry at all times. Then you throw down the next two colony packs plus a spice storage and uber turret, buy a recharge, and go to the next planet.
Repeat process for hours while watching youtube videos on second monitor. Every now and then take a break to annihilate an enemy alien empire by strafing their T1 (lol) colonies with megabombs. Always capture their home planet though, since all their cities convert into your colonies, which means captured home planets output spice at massive rates plus have way more storage.

Spore was a semi-disappointment, it really felt like there was no communication between any of the teams during development, and you could see almost exactly how it got gutted into a cutesy kid friendly game right before launch. I played the shit out of it though, it was a good game for all its flaws, and nothing else has been like it again. The idea of a god game, but you have to build yourself all the way up from a single cell is perfect. Spore was billed as the most immersive simulation game of all time though, and it really never was that. The stats were all pretty simple, the design of your creatures and spaceships was almost entirely aesthetic, it wasn't some hard science optimization game.
Scientist was by far the best alignment, and the gravity wave was cool as hell.

What spore needed was the ability to command groups of NPC vessels in the space stage like units in the city stage, alongside the ability to jump into controlling a single character just like the actual game had. It became incredibly annoying to have to do every task personally, especially military defense. Even if you put an uberturret on a planet you still got the alerts and had to show up to prevent negative consequences, it just made defense easier once you arrived. This is exactly what NASA should be about going forward. Dumping gooberment money into R&D. They’re doing it in part with SX collaboration for things like depots and orbital refueling. But they should also build, test, and varify things like this that SX doesn’t have the time nor money to do on their own. This is why merlin was GG and partly why raptor isn’t an aerospike. JAXA has done rotation detonation engines before too which is cool

There's now about 1 noticeable one a month, there have been no repeats of the big one for now. It does seem to have been a fluke. A big change for cycle 2 is that they have now instituted an micrometeorite avoidance zone, this cuts down the amount of sky that can be observed at any time significantly. It's causing a lot of difficultly for proposals, which were already inanely complicated. It should cut the rate of impacts in half though, it means it should still be in spec after 20 years.

It will also impact the sensitivity reached by programs. The infrared background is domainated by the dust in the solar system. The best time to observe a target is when it's directly away from the Sun direction. Lower background means deeper data. This will push some programs to take worse constraints.
There is a very famous field called COSMOS, which has been studied my almost every telescope and was the target of the widest cycle 1 JWST porgram. It is fucked in the future because it's right on the ecliptic.

I don't think it is really. Only a fraction of the cost was spent during formulation. Note that Perseverance wasn't cheaper than Curiosity. It would cost billions and astrophysics was already fucked by JWST eating up an additional decade of budget. It would be best to build something new and complimentary, to do things JWST can't (x-ray, UV, habitable planets..).

The soviets actually did a TON of research for Cryogenic propulsion for the N1 which gave the RD-56 (KBKhM) and the RD-57 (Lyulka), which were both pretty good engines for their times, and they were some of the earliest staged combustion cryogenic engines! RD-56 became KVD-1 and also was the basis for Indian CE7.5 enginee Sure none of them got to the level of experience and sheer performance as the good old RL-10, but they would have been fine for this use.

I know it’s an overused cliche but I really wish Apollo continued on to mars. I also really wish the N1 either worked sooner or wasn’t canceled in 1974.

Could you imagine if Apollo-Soyuz was held on the lunar surface? Or if the ISS was a joined Russian-American base on Mars instead? Damn.

Bros. Real talk. What would be a more “realistic” scenario for For All Mankind?

They've done a lot of experimenting with hydrogen fueled engines and they've sketched out hydrogen upper stages for just about every large rocket they've ever built, but the only times they've ever actually flown anything using hydrogen were the two Energia launches. None of the hydrogen stages for the Soyuz or the Proton ever made it off the drawing board and the KVTK for the Angara is perpetually five years into the future. There's just something about Russians working with Hydrogen that seems cursed.

Partially reusable Ariane design from 1981. You can tell it’s old because the design for Ariane 5 lacked the solid boosters it actually used.

The vehicle could put 8.3 tons into GTO, and 5 tons direct into GEO. It’s first stage used 9 HM-60 engines, and it’s second stage used a single vacuum HM-60. The HM-60 never flew per se, but it’s design was used for the larger Vulcain engine.

The reusable Ariane would land down range after stage separation. No information on barges or stuff so it seems like they planned to put it down in the water. It, of course, landed by reigniting the center HM-60

It's interesting to read Europa evolve into Ariane

After the brits (and italians) withdrew from ELDO/Europa there was the question of how to replace the Blue Streak S1 on Europa 2 and Europa 3A (3A = Baseline with Blue streak and Hydrolox upper stage)

which gave 3 options
Europa 3B proposed by France with a UDMH L120 (120 tons) first stage powered by 4 Viking engines, eventually grew

Europa 3C with Kerolox L140 (140 tons fuel) first stage built by France but powered by 4 british rolls-royce RZ.2 (same engine as Blue Streak)

Europa 3D proposed by Germany (MBB) with a full-Hydrolox S1 and potentially booster: a mini-Ariane 5 ECA!

Europa 3B was selected, first stage grew to L150 but when Europa was cancellde it quickly evolved into L3S, which took the wise decision of shrinking the hydrolox upper stage and putting another viking second stage between the two, then evolved into Ariane 1

RD-57 would have been a better engine for bigger rockets like SLS than any modern RL-10 variant.
>far more thrust
>smaller diameter than the more high performing RL-10 variants so you're able to cluster more of them in the same area
>basically the same ISP as the high performance RL-10 variants

Only downside is the added weight, but for bigger upper stages and far higher thrust that is more than made up for. You could also basically replace the four RL-10C-3 on the exploration upper stage with one RD-57 and achieve the same thrust and efficiency while losing 20% of the engine mass.

Basically the whole flight profile is “yeah there is no backup”
Falcon has shown how reliable you can get a rocket
It’s still retarded though because even Soyuz with a bazillion successful flights has had flight failures—recently in fact
>Okay but people need to die for the cause. Killing people just means space flight had been normalized
Shut the fuck up. It’s one thing if you do everything within your power and you still die. 14 astronauts died on shuttle but they fought for their lives with post-flight evidence of them flipping switches, preparing for rocket failure, and trying to stay alive. If you made it all the way to deep space and back only to die on a starship because your raptor shat itself on landing ignition then you have flown on a shitty rocket. If your super heavy blows up on ascent and there’s no way to separate and you’re just SOL? You’re riding on a shitty rocket
>Okay b-but 747s don’t carry emergency cessnas!
Go fuck yourself, a rocket can’t attempt to glide back to earth like a plane can. It needs a launch escape system

The flame trench is fifty meters deep, which is about the same size as the Soyuz itself. Getting a rocket that high off the ground would required an earthen ramp even bigger than the flame trench ended up being. The USSR also didn't lack for people who could be handed shovels and told to dig holes in the middle of the Kazakh steppe. A big hole in the ground simplified the last kilometer of rail transport and got around the use of a deluge system in a place that barely gets 13" of rain a year.

How do I write an alternate history/wish fulfillment story about a private company that revolutionizes spaceflight without outright copying SpaceX?

It started as a writing project for fun but now I’m really enjoying doing the math behind the vehicles. The basic jist is:
>Alternate history where (Insert not Elon Musk) CEO hires a lot of the ex-DC-X team in the mid 90’s
>Starts a space company to develop a VTVL SSTO,
>Realize this is too ambitious and develop a reusable hopper like New Shepard first
>2002: Space Shuttle Discovery is destroyed on re-entry; Commercial Resupply begins in 2004 (sooner)
>Company bids a VTVL partially reusable booster in a joint bid to launch Orbital ATK’s Cygnus to the ISS
Etc.

See, if you're gonna go grim go really grim. Asteroid threat in 1985, and a colony must be established offworld if only to dazzle the citizens until the end comes. To make things worse Challenger happens on schedule and Titan IV hasn't started rolling off the lines yet.
You know what, read "Titan" by Stephen Baxter

>>15156801
If you're going for a reusable hopper in the early 2000s it's going to be drawn into the Ansari X Prize competition. Beating SpaceShipOne over the Karman line could let it grab some revenue capitalizing on early space tourism hype. It'd be fairly straightforward to go from that to a small launcher in the same weight class as the Athena II or Minotaur. That's never been a huge market but it if you're getting Falcon 9 scale savings you could steal their lunch the same way Falcon 9 did to Proton and Zenit. Growing from that to something in the same class as Antares wouldn't require any radical new technologies.

Reminder that COTS only exists because SpaceX threw a hissyfit over Rocketplane Kistler. SpaceX didn't just succeed because they had a scrappy attitude that oldspace lacked. They also had to fight the bureaucracy and red tape.

Actually, Stephen Baxter’s Manifold series was my inspiration lol. I first had an idea for a far future series set on a planet colonized by humans that had basically reverted in tech level, until the idea of a suuuuuuper prequel to the first human colonization beyond earth came to mind

>>15156844
Noted. The general thing is that “Insert Company Name” - I’m thinking Endeavour Aerospace Systems - is focused heavily on hydrolox due to the heavy DC-X heritage.
>First engine is a 20 kN Kerolox engine
>Second engine is 100 kN hydrolox engine used on a small scale hopper (but also very cheap)
>Actual space stuff uses a 500 kN hydrolox engine
>Cluster of five is used for not-COTS vehicle
>”Next Gen Engine” is staged combustion hydrolox; 1000 kN, 450 isp, etc for “not starship.”

I did a bunch of math on “not starship” and it’s kind of funny that it ended up being horribly close to starship. Convergent evolution is a helluva drug. The hydrolox vehicle is 120 meters tall and 10 meters wide. It can only put 30 tons into LEO, but I was
1) Very conservative with math
2) Bellyflop; Methalox FFSC; stainless steel, aren’t pursuer here.

Pic related. Is the math.

>Why hydrolox???????
Lunar colonization instead of mars, but most of all, this isn’t supposed to be a “better” timeline, just a different one.

That’s actually a really good point. A scrappy millionaire could bring together $100 million for a Falcon 1 copy, but how the hell does a private company make a medium sized launcher on their own money? Especially in a world without a juicy NASA contract.

The most disappointing thing about the Avatar threads on /tv/ is that nobody talks about the cool human shit. It's just people regurgitating the world building material when they're not fantasizing about being or being with Na'vi.

Maybe if Russia wasn't invading its neighbors every few years they wouldn't be hostile?

Obviously their actions show that they believe nukes to be a credible and sufficient deterrence. But that's not what they say to the West trough official and propaganda channels.
Plenty of past Russian rulers have said that an occasional border skirmish and enlargement keeps the nation's vitality up.
