the more I read about this, the more pointless it seems
some kind of reusable capsule that is able to stay in space for 2 months (after that propellant runs out I guess) that can take payloads into LEO and test them, then bring them back, but it also works as a platform for earth sensing and deep space observation
what the fuck?
it is even shaped like a spaceplane somewhat so it has downrage capability for some strange fucking reason
why not just launch satellites if you want to do earth sensing or deep space observation, and then a completely separate (much simpler than this) capsule with re-entry capability like Varda is doing
it seems like they want to do everything with this one platform, but its going to just be very inefficient in everything it does and lugs around pointless mass like the space shuttle

> ESA’s Geo-return mechanism was established to boost fairness among member states, ensuring that the nations that invest in the agency will generate a “fair return.” In a nutshell, participating states in an optional development program should receive industrial contracts in a proportional way with respect to their contribution to that program to ensure that money invested benefits the countries that actually contributed to that program. That is to say for example, if you put 30% of the funds into the program, you are expected to receive as close as possible to industrial contracts accounting for 30% of the overall program.

ok it makes sense now I guess, this is just busywork

> “Some other challenges were instead technical challenges, that arose, as it is natural in complex development programs with a lot of novelties when digging more and more into the detailed design phase,” Galli continued. “One of them for sure is the autonomous landing with 150 meter precision under a parafoil, a really complex and challenging objective to be achieved and for which we are indeed preparing an extensive test campaign for validation of the guidance and navigation control algorithms”.

I really don't want to start this back up, but regardless of her past, this case is her merely doing her job. SpaceX had hiring practices that weren't properly following the law, the DOJ investigated, SpaceX changed their procedures to be in compliance, this case is to compensate those who were affected during the period where SpaceX wasn't doing it properly. SpaceX isn't being singled out, the DOJ recently went after Aerojet for a similar improper hiring practice and most other aerospace companies properly call out US persons in their job postings like SpaceX now also does. It isn't government corruption to enforce the law.
Can we please do spaceflight now?

I'm not commenting on her motivations, I'm saying that regardless of her motivations she's doing her job here. This investigation is also larger than just one person, it was started when she wasn't even working for the DOJ (the tweet that's been going around was also made before she was at the DOJ).

>>15700767
Wrong, SpaceX is a private company, government agencies have different hiring rules that lead to citizenship being required. Private companies can also require citizenship if security clearance is required, but that doesn't apply to the jobs in question, which are just ITAR, for which US persons, not citizens, are the requirement, which is how other aerospace companies do it as well.
>They are.
They aren't or that Aerojet case wouldn't exist.

For the record XRISM is definitely cursed.
2000: Japan tries to launch ASTRO-E, an x-ray telescope with a novel energy resolving detector (microcalorimeter). Launch failed.
2006: Japan builds ASTRO-E-II (Suzaku), a replacement. After a successful launch a malfunction meant the liquid helium boiled off in one week, instead of years. Rendering the microcalorimeter useless.
2016: Suzaku is old and shit, JAXA launches ASTRO-H again with a microcalorimeter. Hitomi does one observation before the death spiral.
2023: XRISM is a simplied version of Hitomi, its pedigree is 3 straight failures.

They also designed them to be stable even in unlikely landing scenarios. The critical condition in the design phase was a landing at a four feet per second horizontal velocity and a downhill 6 degree slope and the LM at an additional downwards pitch of 6 degrees. The design team made it so it could land in conditions beyond that with a safety margin but that was the limit they expected to work with when doing the structural analysis.

This was extremely conservative though given how gently the LM pilots touched down on the actual lunar landings.

SILENT BARKER about to be launched

>Space Force Lt. General Michael Guetlein, commander of Space Systems Command, said in a pre-launch teleconference on Monday (Aug. 28) that the Silent Barker mission is designed to "deter aggression" through letting the United States' potential adversaries know that the Space Force is keeping a close watch on what happens in geosynchronous orbit (GEO).

>"A huge element of deterrence is the ability for the adversary to know what we can and cannot see," Guetlein said. "So we actually want our competitors to know that we have eyes in GEO and that we can see what's happening in GEO. Not only are we going to maintain custody and the ability to detect what's going on in GEO, but we'll have the indications and warnings to know there's something out of the normal occurring, and that goes a long way towards deterrence."

It's hard to imagine a dramatically different rocket engine that replaces raptor, unless it's some kind of TWR fusion reactor 50 - 100 years out.

Maybe an elevator, ring, tether or beamed power engine could replace chemical rockets for launch, but the megaprojects could take decades to simply construct even if the technology were already available.

Yes. It only drifted at all because of engines failing. If they got unlucky with the wrong engines failing it could've drifted straight into the launch tower.

The engines were gimballing to move away from the tower anyway, it would have to be a major failure and a likely shutdown if thrust was so asymmetric in the direction of the tower
