That's basically to be expected. Unless it's some ridiculously lucky observation or some 5+ year project covering an entire story, they generally don't bother. If they at least liked it they may suggest somewhere else for it to go under their umbrella, such as Nature Communications, Nature Cell Biology, etc.

If it gets into review they're taking it seriously, albeit they may casually ask you to do another year or two worth of work just for them to ~maybe~ accept it. Typically though they're more like, "nope, we don't believe it, try somewhere else" in which case brace for the story to percolate all over the place for a while.

Some PIs overestimate themselves/their postdocs' work to be frank and always say "this is a nature paper for sure!" when in reality, no, it fucking isn't.

Yeah, journal rejections can sting like a bitch. But there are other journals to submit your paper, and in some circumstances they're a lot better to submit to. Even if a journal has a greater overall prestige, it doesn't mean your paper is necessarily a good fit. Honestly, I've seen papers with a fuck load more citations in "lower ranked" journals. My suggestion, check where the papers you have cited have been published and publish there.
