it's a tradition analogous to the "Persian flaw" in weaving, passed down over thousands of generations of academics, kind of a secret-club thing we learn about in PhD and aren't supposed to mention to outsiders. It indicates that knowledge is never completely destroyed, and that we always build on the foundation of the work done before us

The main alternatives right now are
* whiteboard + dry erase markers
>need a good board
>need to handle the markers carefully or they dry out
>need high-quality markers or they dry quickly, or don't erase
>board can get damaged by fingerprints
* electronic projector + computer slides
>expensive
>requires good IT support
>have to prepare the slides beforehand
>slides have to be good
>kids will pester you for the slide files
* overhead projector + transparency pen
>absolutely no disadvantage
>traditional yet perennial style
>some say God Himself first created light using an overhead projector

>> No.10529993

>>10529945
I think its alright. Better than whiteboards with those shitty markers that always runs out. Its nice to have a low-tech solution at least in backup. Blackboards usually don't clutter the room, and you can use it in conjunction with most other solutions.

* Smartboard
> extremely expensive, almost no school has it, and if they do they only have a few of them for testing. they usually find it isn't worth it.
> requires good IT support
> can function as blackboard with stylus markers
> can function as ordinary screencast from a PC
> people constantly thinks it is a whiteboard and writes it on it with markers which must be removed with a special cleaning solution that never seem to be present in the classroom.

I like black boards. They don't bug out like projectors, and they feel better to write on than white boards.

>transparent pen
This pen comes in two main types. The permanent and non-permanent. The non-permanent works like a marker on a whiteboard that you can wipe out after use, thus you can reuse your transparent sheet of "plastic paper" (tranparancy or slide). If you choose the permanent pen, then your transparancys are fit to store for later use as your presentation won't wipe out on handling. You can also copy or scan the transparancys for digital storage or distribution. It feels great to be able to write like you are used to writing on a piece of paper.
