Consciousness arises from simple rules. It's an emergent phenomenon. Take the game of life, it's turing complete and you can in fact create a programmable computer in it (look for one on youtube).
Out of simple rules, amazing complexity.
This is the nature of consciousness.

Once we have enough machines connected on the internet, out of the sea of information will arise an AGI. Naturally.
We're just building the substrate for now.
