11733548 No.11733548 [Reply] [Original]

SN4 just had another static fire which promptly exploded, DM2 has been delayed until Saturday, and SpaceX have their FAA license for suborbital flight testing (which is irrelevant now)
SpaceX insurance rates for Starship testing have just increased to two hundred million dollars.
China has announced their space station plans for the next few years.

There are legitimate reasons for why we'd want He-3 fusion reactors and engines, independent of D-D fusion being available.
The biggest reason is obviously the much reduced neutron flux per megawatt of thermal power created by the reaction. Neutrons are a shitty particle, they represent a large fraction of the energy released by any fusion reaction that produces them and they're very inconvenient and difficult to capture, direct, and/or contain. As a result of having no charge they pass straight out of the fusion plasma and get soaked up by any solid (or liquid) material in the area, which both causes those materials to become radioactive AND deposits a shitload of waste heat in a diffuse form.

Compared to neutronic fusion, anuetronic fusion offers much greater prospects in terms of utility as a rocket propulsion system, because despite being more difficult to ignite and sustain, aneutronic fusion engines could feasibly achieve a greater output thrust at higher efficiency than any neutronic fusion engine, because you can pretty much burn your He-3 reactor as hard as you want and you won't end up melting the inside of any solid panel thicker than a millimeter, as would start happening to D-D or D-T fusion engines being run at similar power outputs.

The downsides of He-3 fusion are that it's way harder to actually perform and it requires a fuel that we have no significant supply of. Luckily we don't really need He-3 for fusion engines to be a thing, it's just that we won't have anything resembling a fusion torch-drive until we crack high power aneutronic fusion, so that our engines only encounter thermal issues at power levels where the fusion gamma ray flux becomes a significant source of structural heating.

That's extreme over-generalizing. Launchpads look very different for each rocket, there's no common point to begin with. You probably meant
>why Soyuz launch pad looks like it does?
Because
1. The original R-7 control system in 50's couldn't compute the roll maneuver, so the entire launchpad had to be rotated to the desired direction. Newer Soyuz launch sites don't have the turntables, so they look a bit different
2. The original rocket had to be sunk into the launch pad a bit to deal with the winds - remember, the lower part of Soyuz is W I D E. This was solved in 60s.
3. Soyuz rockets are assembled horizontally and verticalized on the launchpad, just like most Russian rockets (except for example Rokot, and French Baseduzes in Guiana onto which the payload is mounted vertically with a gantry crane).
4. The open pit is needed to divert the exhaust and lower the sound/vibration load. The huge pit is a distinct feature of Soyuz; rockets like Zenit or Proton needed much smaller pits, almost indistinguishable from other launch site features. Rockets launching from Canaveral use water suppression system, because it's easier than digging a pit in a swamp. Energia launch pad was raised above ground instead of using pits or water.

If SpaceX and other private ventures turn out to be successful, would the time come for serious evaluation of rotating torus habitats?

Monocoque construction is out of the question for even a small torus, so the torus must be composed of modular segments that are assembled into a complete torus in orbit.

Also, interplanetary human-rated spacecraft should either have a small torus or semi-torus arc for crew quarters, and have one or more "dingy" lander craft docked to ferry people to and from a planet's surface.

Unfortunately, this would require development of enormous Mega-heavy launch systems with upwards of 1500 tons to orbit capacity.

Yes, because in a free-for-all type of media system there is still the possibility (and assuming the government doesn't intervene to create state backed monopolies) practically the inevitability of market disruption which will overturn propaganda mills. Before the thread dies can someone ITT please explain to me why we can't create aircraft that can simply fly out of our atmosphere and into space? Is it because of the earth's gravitational pull or is it due to fuel constraints? Why do we need to rely on rockets to move directly upwards to reach space when we could just fly out of our atmosphere instead?

Pic unrelated

That's a pretty in-depth conversation. What you're describing is an SSTO Spaceplane, and the concept certainly has its proponents. It would be aesthetic as fugg at the very least. You should google around. Everyday Soistronaut has a decent video to get you started.

Well, the kind of engine is certainly a problem. You can't use jets in space, you need.. rockets.
So you at least need to make an hybrid, that carries enough delta-v to climb to space (in the best case, like in an SR-71 you are still flying at 25km), and the worst: gain enough speed to orbit.
Again, even in a case like the SR-71 you are flying at a fraction of orbital speed.

There are some types of engines like the Scramjet that could have an use to climb and accelerate on the upper atmosphere, but I don't know if it is still efficient enough.

>> No.11744122

>>11744026
You not only need to get out of the atmosphere you also have to get to ~8km/s. Once you are out the the atmosphere everything that isn't fuel or payload becomes dead weight, all that wing, control surface and hydraulics are useless in space.
