>Observers estimate the satellites weigh close to 5,200 kg and have very large (estimated 100 m diameter)[2] radio reflecting dishes. NRO L-32, which is seen as the fifth satellite in the series, is according to NRO director Bruce Carlson "(...) the largest satellite in the world".[3] It is believed that this refers to the diameter of the main antenna, which might be well in excess of 100 m (330 ft).[4]

Orbital refueling eliminates the need for pure orbital stages for Starship

>> No.12370643

Saturn V didn't refuel, and had to transport people to the Moon and back all in one go. Most modern rockets simply deliver payloads to orbit, which is pretty easy with two stages. If the payload is supposed to travel elsewhere, like to Mars, this is usually done by the payload's own thrusters and fuel tanks, which are typically inside of a fairing and far too small to be really be called the "Third stage" of the rocket.

Climbing a mountain is done as much for the change in perspective and introspective experience as it is for the thrill, challenge and sensational experience, the "Overview effect" astronauts report experiencing from observing the Earth as whole is evidence enough that changing our perspective changes our selves in profound ways, often for the better

What then does it say about those who see no meaning and value in climbing a mountain let alone venturing to space, even if they would never do such things themselves.

What do we think of solar thermal propulsion?
>A solar thermal rocket is a theoretical spacecraft propulsion system that would make use of solar power to directly heat reaction mass, and therefore would not require an electrical generator, like most other forms of solar-powered propulsion do. The rocket would only have to carry the means of capturing solar energy, such as concentrators and mirrors. The heated propellant would be fed through a conventional rocket nozzle to produce thrust. Its engine thrust would be directly related to the surface area of the solar collector and to the local intensity of the solar radiation.

The likely demolition of the Arecibo Observatory makes me wonder, would it be more useful to have a giant radar dish that can rotate? Like, isn't being stuck facing straight up a major handicap for the observatory?
It could be more practical to assemble a replacement in space instead of on the ground.

Pros:
-Can point itself in any direction
-Far less mass required overall, as the structure only needs the strength to survive tidal forces and its own rotation
-Construction process is possibly easier, as the lack of need for strength means designs can focus on being easy to build instead of being strong (for example, the dish could be assembled by folding out rails and then sliding panels outwards along those rails, meaning astronauts can assemble the dish while staying at the centre of it)

Cons:
-Observatory must supply its own power for the radar
-It's really fucking bright if it's reflecting sunlight towards the ground

Larger is better in terms of TWR. The combustion chamber produces more trust the larger the nozzle bell is, but the pumps and piping do not need to grow proportionally. So larger engines have less supportive overhead.

However, larger is more problematic. The combustion is not as stable. Read about the F1 and the "controlled detonations" story. Larger engines can be a development hell.

Additionally, bigger and fewer engines mean you have less redundancy.
If an engine fails, unless it's right in the centre, you have to disable the opposite engine to compensate.
If you have 1-3 engines, losing an engine means losing the rocket.
If you have 4 engines, losing an engine means losing half your thrust, which may or may not cost the mission depending on when it happens.
I'm no expert, but I figure you need at least 7 engines in order to be able to lose one at any stage of the mission and still be able to succeed.

A Raptor engine alone weights 1.5 tons. Imagine carrying a dead ton to orbit.

it'd be feasible for them to buy much more then cubesat launches anon (universities already do that). Also the goal now is 1 million per launch, and assuming they only ever reach 100 tons to LEO that still means 10$/kilogram. Universities could probably create their own small space stations at such prices. For example, a university could send a 50 ton space station into orbit for only 500000 dollars.

With just how many starlink launches there are going to be do you think we will start seeing third party starlink form factor satellites much in the same way we have cubesats. It seems to me if you could make a satellite that can seamlessly just be shoved into a starlink stack you could probably get a pretty cheap launch cost from spacex. You could even make a starlink shaped tug that deploys a shitload of cubesats on the cheap.

Not true. The additional mass of the thrust structure needed to mount a cluster of smaller engines is real but not very big. Otherwise, it 100% comes down to engine TWR and engine Isp. Both of these factors are maximized in an engine with as high a combustion chamber pressure as you can manage, which is harder to manage at larger scales. Also, turbopumps scale weird and start to get proportionally heavier at larger scales. The ideal engine size is probably something around Raptor sized.

You've been tasked with designing a telescope to be the foundation for the next generation of space telescopes. I know I'm massively oversimplifying, but is it fair to say a rocket would have far less fatigue cracking than an airliner? Very basically speaking, a rocket only really endures significant forces in one direction for a couple of minutes, within a well controlled region (ie. not launching when there's a lot of wind shear). Contrast with planes, which have to deal with all sorts of weather conditions, turbulence, loading in different directions and pressurisation/depressurisation cycles on the fuselage constantly.

Would small pieces of ice evaporate in Earth orbit?
If so, it could make sense to have a big slab of ice in orbit that's just meant to act as a sponge for impacts from junk. The idea being that like everything else, it produces a spray of deadly debris when hit by deadly debris, but because it's ice the new debris is short lived, meaning it's replacing long-lived debris with short-lived debris.

Well, junk isn't a concern in LEO is it? Because small things deorbit pretty quickly.
If it's the interaction with the atmosphere that causes the evaporation of ice, then at the altitudes where junk is virtually permanent flecks of ice may not evaporate over a reasonable timeframe.

For aluminium fatigue cracking is only a matter of load vs number of load cycles, so it depends entirely on design. Planes have decades of engineering behind them specifically to stop this from being an issue, rockets were single use until like a few years ago so it wasn't a problem for them as well. For reusable rockets it would be pretty much the same process of iterative design it was for planes I guess, except we know a lot more materials science now and have way better computers to model stuff before relying on it to not kill people and destroy expensive equipment.
Coincidentally, steel doesn't have this problem and will not crack no matter the amount of cycles so long you keep it below a certain load limit.

>The point is that China's space program is forcing the US to stay ahead.
Who is China's space program forcing to stay ahead, and how? Certainly not NASA, who are a joke at this point. SpaceX? I doubt they think much about China at all, it isn't their competition, they're far ahead even if it was, and their behavior is guided by their internal goals. BO, ULA/Boing/Lockmart? The competition they're thinking about is SpaceX. Even the smallsat launchers' main competition is SpaceX, China launches a bunch of smallsats but they're not a workable market so it literally doesn't matter.
Why are Chinaboos only capable of vague sweeping statements? "They have the willpower", "you're underestimating the enemy", "w-well what about competition", etc. When you get into the specifics of the merits of their ideas they either change the subject or don't respond.

Democrats doesn't care abou bigt white boys playing with their space toys, when Tyrese can't find a job and have six children to feed. And Biden knows damn well he got sent into the office to feed Tyrese and his children, not to land Karen on the Moon. In comparison, Chinese government doesn't care if millions are starving. When Chairman Xi say there will be a moon base, there will be one.

That anon does have a point. ESA may be lame, but it's the EU's SLS. They're not going to abandon it.

Then why not feed Tyrone and put Karen on the moon? Spaceflight is getting cheaper thanks to private spaceflight, and the problems with social programs clearly aren't due to funding.

Boing can't into space, Artemis doesn't have a lander yet, and using Starship as a lander is still bigger sci-fi, than having a working SLS.
