So do we have actual confirmation that this change in the last 35 years is indicative of a rate at which we're approaching it or is it just an amendment to an old calculation?
Also, if we are indeed heading towards it, I'd assume the rate we approach it wouldn't remain static, so that ~475 year figure is probably smaller because as the pull of gravity increases we'd likely accelerate

Yeah, but it's kinda like, if you knew a guy who said he'd figured out how to know the lottery numbers, and every week, he called the exact right numbers. He explained the theory to you, and then you went and tested the method on a bunch of other lotteries and it worked. The point being, the theory predicts novel events, so it's clearly not just a coincidence.
