The LM-5G is supposed to launch around 2027 which isn't an unreasonable date. They're starting to really hit their stride producing YF-100 engines and they've had a number of successful test firings with K and M variants that the 5G needs. They still need to build a lunch pad for it but that's less of an engineering challenge and more application of funds. The biggest holdup with the 5G is that they just don't have any payloads that could use it yet. Their next-gen capsule is still years away and they're all out of deep space probes for the moment.

Yeah, the Project 921 / LM-5DY / LM-5G are all mostly the same thing. The specs change a bit from announcement to announcement but the triple core, 5m diameter, 7x YF-100 cluster idea has stayed consistent from the start. "Long March 5G" is the closest its had to an official name. "Project 921" was stuck on it by the Chinese spaceflight community and LM-5DY (Dengyue, or Moon-landing) was given to it semi-unofficially by one of the designers who was trying to hype it up in the press to secure additional political support for the project.

It's a matter of budgetary limitations, mostly. China's space program is under the direct control of their military, but that also means that their space program has to share budgetary space with their NRO-equivalent. They've ended up taking the slow and methodical approach because it's hard to focus on more than one big project at a time.

The LM-9 hasn't really existed for most of its lifespan. China loves putting out renders that talk about how they're the equal of anyone else in the world but most of the time they can't back it up with real hardware. LM-9 started back in 2010 as an answer to the Ares V. The 2015 version came out when they briefly thought they'd be able to con the RD-180 off of the Russians. Their actual engine tech still hasn't quite caught up to their powerpoints, but they're getting a lot closer.

The LM-5G is actually the product of a completely separate design bureau than the LM-9. It's kinda like China has their own N-1 vs UR-700 competition.

Bezos is deluded. He seriously thought that NASA was paying SpaceX EXTRA to land rockets in addition the payload to orbit delivery. So he wanted a NASA contract with Boeing SLS levels of numbers for his company, so that he could blow up New Glenn rockets like SpaceX blew up Falcon 9 to the tune of $200M a piece, to build up his fleet and landing experience at intermediary SLS scale heavy uplift. So when SpaceX won HLS, he was absolutely livid that NASA would choose SpaceX over the "National Team" which is just a euphemism for another 20-years of grift. Hence the lawsuit. BlueOrigin was after the money and didn't give a damn about the mission or NASA. They're the ones, after all, that got massively dinged for absolutely contrived Intellectual Property constraints regarding the HLS lander. NASA was appalled by the audacity of Blue to even suggest that they'd retain 100% of all IP created by the public/private partnership and that Blue would be the ultimate arbiter on what would be disclosed to NASA for any report generated at any point in the mission profile including and up to total denial of access if they felt like it.

They're certainly trying to ramp up their production. They've supposedly got "dozens" of engines in some stage of assembly currently and they did hire a lot more people a few months ago.

I think ULA is just about tapped out on potential customers. They've always been a company that catered to expensive governemnt flights over the commercial market. 60% of NSSL-2 is about as good as its possible to get on that front and if NSSL-3 breaks away from the block buy model they might just be screwed. They got a big win with Kuiper deal, but that was purely on the "anyone but SpaceX" angle, and there just aren't that many people in that market segment. Even OneWeb is launching on Falcon 9 now.

I don't like Blue Origin, but I like oldspace a lot less. Right now an anemic BE-4 production rate is the best way to kill off one of the major players.

I think we would have an unmanned Starship Mars landing, whether or not it's successful, a massive colonization push with a half dozen or so unmanned ships a cycle to get solar panels, supplies and habitats on the ground, as well as an ISRU test article will happen post 2035. I don't think SpaceX will send crew until sending crew actually contributes to the colonization effort. Around 2040 they'll have landed 30 ships laden with supplies before a manned mission lands.
