See how the Milk Way looks from earth? Solar system is actually askew to the normal orbital plane of the Milky Way, if you would think of it like a spinning plate.

Somebody came up with the map in op's pic to give Africa and South America a fighting chance at becoming important.

We see things that are on top as important so the theory is that when you look at the map as displayed in op's pic you will instinctively believe that Africa is a more important continent than N. America, Europe and Asia. They believe this will somehow mindfuck corporations to move into shithole countries.

We already use labor and resources from shithole countries, so in a way they have.

It's also the same reasoning why in the US so many things are priced X.99 and not just even amounts. We tend to subconsciously round down.

It was an arbitrary decision. If you look at some ancient maps of the UK you'll see that east is up. Consider this as a thought exercise: try describing left and right to an alien with no concept of our direction on his own planet over the phone.
