Because, while I admit I never played a proper game of WHFB, my interest in the lore and world was rooted in the Old World.
I hate that it was killed for the sole reason of doing something new and different and totally-not-Magic tier realmshit. I hate that they made Ground Marines. I hate that they out and out eradicated the Brettonians and the Tomb Kings, even though I know neither of those two factions saw much sale. I hate that they got rid of Slaanesh in a blatant attempt to make it so parents wouldn't screech about tits, then decided that they would bring him back later. I hate that it took them something like 5 years to getting around to making new Chaos Warriors - if Chaos even matters then it should have been the second thing made after Grund Mareens.
In my opinion the entire thing was an abortion that failed to die like it should've, and now lives on with the scars from the coat hangar while aping its dead father.

Is your stance is that UMs should be allowed to dominate all media because if other chapters had more of the spotlight it would somehow be equally bad?
Because that really doesn't make much sense.
The whole point of having loads of chapters is the diversity of it.
There's no good reason why werewolf viking space marines needed to exist or any other bizarre permutation of what a standard astartes force should be.
But it's the most popular faction and it makes sense to let people choose their flavor.

There's literally 1000 chapters and most media focuses on the 1.

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade - less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about. We'll be happy to help you get started on this playstyle.

In class oriented games, each class is heavily tied to one of the standard 6 attributes, strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma with a minor focus on a couple others depending on the role you want to play. However, normally, the Divine classes such as Priest or Cleric are the ones that rely on Wisdom as their main attribute.
In a setting without a Divine presence or origin, what class takes over the mantle of “the Wisdom class”? Do you just split that typical Magic user class between the mental attributes? If so, what are the classes and what exactly differentiates them?

Nobody says it wasn't an extremely harrowing or difficult experience.
I hope you finished it at least so you could get something out of it.
Pic related is what broke me and shit like that, and moments like that are why I still defend Crossed even though I completely understand everyone who hates it.

It takes really good writing to make something that hurts as much as the original Crossed miniseries does. Moments like this or the black guy saying "I don't want to live anymore" and you listen to what he says and it all makes total sense having followed this character and what he's been through... but it's not just there to be bleak or to kill him off.
Or Thomas' sacrifice... or many of the other genuinely amazing moments from the miniseries.

This is why I say it's what the Walking Dead wishes it was. It has the balls to go there and in the original series (but not much else) it has in places the writing to back it up.
If you're reading anything else you have nobody but yourself to blame. It's basically all we've said since the start.

it also serves a purpose that none of you seem to notice which is... it makes pointless edge in other comics more obvious and despicable.
Violence/gore excess in other comics becomes less palatable and clearer when something is just trying to be shocking and failing at it. Think of Gordon Jr's victim in The Black Mirror, or the two little girls that get beheaded in the prison in Walking Dead.
I see it and I think "they're trying to be Crossed". If you hate edge you have to value that.

>>78116884
>>78117200
>There's nothing mentally fragile about hating Crossed. It's one of the worst comics ever written by one of the most overrated and least talented comic writers in the industry.
That's Crossed:Psychopath which nobody with a brain defends.
There is far, far worse than Crossed in the industry.

There's also a spectrum of quality in Crossed works from worth it to irredeemable.

Thanks.

I hope you're reading the miniseries or Wish You were Here. There's a list of "Where to start" with crossed on the subreddit I might post here for the curious. Not all of it's good, but it's a decent list of stuff worth tango-ing with.

Pic related is another absolutely brilliant moment and I love the chick who ends up with the short stick. It's something I'm considering stealing for an eventual apocalyptic survival game I'd like to run.

It's also rare in that unlike a lot of similar stories, every major member of the group has some level of use, and even the douchebag characters get a fully fleshed out personality. There's also rare moments of beauty in there when they manage to get away, stuff like the arctic wolves later in the winter chapter. Even one off dick characters like Brett, there's a reason they stick with the group or are allowed to.

I do consider the original miniseries-arc a... remarkably humanist work despite its reputation. A big focus on the series is people and their value, even if it's understated. The party feels every depth and nobody who sticks around is entirely useless. The characters feel each death or loss and grieve when they have time to grieve. They never relish in killing anyone they don't have to, which is why when the Brett thing happens it's a big deal and forces the MC to stop and think.

Fuck, Crossed Dead Or Alive, which was written by Ellis himself is literally about a piece of shit "survival at all costs" edgelord type who tries to screw over the survivors he's with "out of survival" and suffers greatly for it.

In any nihilistic goreporn edgelord story that story probably wouldn't end that way, or have that moral.

I ran something semi-similar once in a dead island type setting with friends during a game of Ten Candles. The prompt for the Threat I got was "They eat each other".
The players managed to save a family by setting them on a boat before the final scene though, so that was good.

Some shit in Badlands is legitimately atrocious though, terrible art and story line, literally how the fuck these guys even managed to get published (boat captain arc and one where the art looked like wikihow instructions).

What created the races in your setting, or what myths elude to it? Surely they didn't evolve from fantasy monkeys, right?

In mine:

>Extradimensional alien crashlanded in a ship thousands of years ago
>The ship is impossibly, incomprehensibly powerful, but the being is trapped inside
>Decided to create a bunch of fucking retards to help him get out, but no matter what he created they couldn't free him
>Throughout hundreds of generations they spread into the overworld and forgot about him, becoming the mortal races
>Now that they've advanced, the original being, still trapped within the ship deep under the earth, is luring them back to break it free
>This has created a huge escalation in conflict as the region is now subconsciously desired by every faction
>Also kickstarted several asymmetrical wars with the tribals who never left the region like their ancestors

What factors determine what Ouroboros' mortal incarnation is like? Has anyone ever tried to keep these incarnations ignorant and delay the death and rebirth of the universe? Are races like humans and Orcs constant throughout the cycles?

You know what’s kinda funny?
Rothfuss himself noted that NOBODY should ever have romantic views like his main character when a fan told him that she “wanted to have a romance like his”, because his views on romance were incredibly myopic and self-serving and rarely if ever took into account the reality of the situation or the other person’s circumstances.

A big reoccurring theme of the stories is the numerous ways that he was being a huge hypocrite on many subjects, which is probably why at the end of the stories he’s a sad man who failed at life.

huh, the setting with the best magic system I've ever seen does the apprentice route (pic).

although the genre's groundbreaking work (Earthsea) features a school without any of the problems you mention. and also has one of the best ever magic systems.

I think it's more that a wizard university will churn out knowledgeable and well-rounded spellcasters who have some in-depth knowledge of their particular field of focus. A wizard apprentice in comparison will have a an incredibly deep pool of knowledge regarding magic, but an equally narrow focus as well. However, it wouldn't be uncommon for university wizards to heavily specialize and take on apprentices, nor would it be uncommon for an apprenticed wizard to attend an university to broaden his knowledge.

Have you ever felt that someone doesn't 'get' Warhammer 40k?

The Imperium are not "based", Chaos is not "fun", Tau are not "the good guys", Tyranids are not "cute", Necrons are not "cool"

Virtually every faction in 40k represents some horrible 'bad ending' for humanity, be it decay into a system of every negative political ideology combined, unstoppable alien invasion, invincible robot AI skeletons or the literal forces of hell

1st learn what satire means, also include parody with that.
2nd rick priestly, the guy who single handedly made 40k has said explicitly that it isnt satire but a kitchen sink setting of based on his archeological degree, 2000AD and medieval europe with warhammer fantasy battle miniatures.
> The setting is what you make it so what's it matter if some past writers had their own commentary to motivate their work.
not a single BL writer has made satire but if they did please give examples and what real world event it is satirizing.

Why do gritty and realistic games and OSR get such a bad rap on /tg/?

8 replies omitted. Click Reply to view.
>> No.78020051

Personally, I find OSR is mostly a cargo cult. They are copying features from old editions and trying to recapture a feel. Problem is they don't understand those features and the design.

All the interesting games that go for that gritty, underdog feel have their own systems.
